Description Screen capture of Daken and F4 in early stages!

That's the average amount of layers i use when i color comics.
Personally it works better for me if i do all my render in a single layer allowing color to mix completely.

Hi Marte!

I have a question: what's that layer named "plasta" about?

I have a bad habit of using way too many layers.

Hasn't been too big of a deal, but I've gone from 300 dpi to 600 dpi, so I'm trying to watch it.

I dont understand your layer order?? How can your holds layer be underneath your lines layer?? and your rendering layer is underneath your flats layer?

Wow, wow! Thank you for sharing this!

But, because this looks SO gorgeous, I have to say this. The final version, with all the highlights, loses out on this dynamic lighting, in my humble opinion. You know, here, Mister Fantastic, Invisible Girl and Daken are in the shadows, while Strong light falls on Thing because of Johnny. Creates an amazing effect.

Sorry for the pointless rant, but the lighting on this looks fantastic.

Interesting. I'll have to meet you in person one day and pick your brain about color theory.

Could expalain what the 'lasta' layer is? And how your colour hold layer works (I barely get into the technical side such as line holds!!)

Looks great having just a few layers... and the outcome is always stunning

did a great explanation about the flats layer!
Colorhold is changing the lineart's black default color to achieve a desired blending.
All Johnny's flame lineart is colorholded to orange

Ah, I usually layer that on top or directly change the lineart itself... I was just wondering why it would be under unless the original lineart had that piece removed!! Cheers Marte, and i'll check out KMFDM for ya

Plasta layer is called the 'Flats' layer in english. It's used for laying on generic unsaturated colors, each color area can then be selected to color specifically without having to worry about accidentally coloring something you didn't want.
Jeremy Farlow aka has a pretty good tutorial on flatting over at [link]

The 'color holds' layer is the layer used for special effects like glows

hope that makes sense!

I guess I porbably do everything already, but I just like to keep adding to the knowledge you know!? I cant work without flatting anymore... helps to layout the mood for me anyway! I just love Marte's style, its amazing and keeps me enthralled... I need to learn it haha!

I'm stuck on digi paints at the mo so it'll be a while before I get a chance at this style again 4

Thanks though mate

i do the same, love going around and seeing how people work. maybe its time you put up a tutorial of your own *wink wink*

marte's work is always top notch, and he's just a nice guy. plus he listens to kmfdm so he's also got great taste in music

kmfdm!!!? I'm a cheesy music lover myself, I have no idea what these hip youngsters are listening to nowadays haha! I cant do tut's, I just run away with myself whilst painting and forget to take snapshots of the process. I tried to give people smaller versions of the psd's but i'm sure they would have been useless as I flatten often :/

Gotta love the techniques of others for sure
