Christa felt a knot in her guts as she stared at the twisted wreckage that had once been her ship. All that remained of Pandora, humanity’s first interstellar spacecraft, was burning at the bottom of the crater it had formed when it impacted the ground.

Mitch had never made it out.

Christa was all alone on an alien world, nearly a dozen light years from Earth. She had been on her own during survival training before, but even miles away from civilization in the middle of the wilderness, she always knew there were human beings somewhere nearby.

She was the only human being on this planet.

The only provisions she had were in the emergency ration kit in a pocket of her spacesuit; it consisted of a half-liter of water and some glorified energy bars. She could breathe the air on this world, but she had no idea whether she could subsist on any of its plant or animal life.

Her only hope for survival was to make contact with the world’s inhabitants, the people who had built the cities she had observed from space. Their technology seemed pretty advanced. Surely, they would be able to come up with food suitable for a human being.

Yet even if Christa was doomed to slowly starve to death, she had to make contact with the aliens. At the very least, this first contact would be her legacy. She would be famous on this world as well as the Earth as the first person who reached out across the stars!
