Description

"Those half-clan creatures deserved to die!! Just like their mother!" Frecklewish didn't notice as the shadows began to seep closer to her, chasing away StarClans fog. Too late she realized a wall blocked her way. Stars faded away until she was surrounded by the place of no stars.

--------

Regarding Mapleshade's vengeance, apparently Frecklewish had been sent to the Dark Forest after she died. I've never quite understood why Frecklewish was the only character in the story to go to the Dark Forest (aside from Mapleshade, obviously). The sad truth is, the wiki is probably inaccurate. But that's boring, so let's try to work with this.

Truthfully, this confuses me mostly because Oakstar and Appledusk did not receive the same punishment, despite the former abandoning kits and the latter breaking the warrior code.

Oakstar had a layer of responsibility to those kits, it never sat well with me that he would banish kittens during a storm. But I can see why the character would do that. He was grieving, had been lied to, and frankly, the kits wouldn't thrive in Thunderclan. They'd be bullied, judged, mocked, ostracized... At the time of banishment, the kits were healthy and with their mother. Oakstar didn't intend to sentence them to death, only to exile them out of his and his clans life. Just wish he could've waited until the storm had passed, or conditions had been more pleasant for the little ones...

I'd like to imagine that he did show (note I say show, not genuinely feels) remorse for the fate of the kits, and this show of remorse and humility is what earned his way into StarClan.

I will briefly mention Ravenwing, who had callously exposed the kits parentage and unleashed all hell onto them- which is really his only crime. Cruelly telling the truth to let kits be punished. The prophecy he received may also have highly motivated his decision.

Appledusk had still managed to enter StarClan despite... a few things... He recklessly had an affair with a cat outside of his clan (breaking the warrior code), accidentally killed two cats (which is a huge reason why the kits ended up hated to begin with), and abandoned the mother of his late kits in her greatest time of need whilst nestling up to a different mate in literally the same moment. To me, it just seemed like he was playing the victim to evade consequences, but he could have been 100% genuine in his regret. The loss of his kits must've hurt, genuinely.

That being said... It's so difficult for me empathize with the guy. He received no consequences, aside from the loss of his children. But those kits were not ones he could have raised safely due the political climate of the clans anyway, and he was with Reedshine before and after being exposed as a cheat. His dead kits seemed to be gone and forgotten, soon to be replaced with new kits via Reedshine. That's just... so gross to me (I tried to not make this sound so biased, but I'm failing ahahah...), knowing that he'd go on happily lying to Reedshine's face while already having other kits. But it doesn't matter what I think; StarClan seemed to have believed the remorse, and I truly think that is the difference between him and Frecklewish. Appledusk showed remorse for his actions, and longed to repent!

Frecklewish's love for the kits melted away into hatred real fast upon learning they were NOT her niece and nephews. Perhaps a lot of her grief over her brothers passing had been projected onto the kits in order to cope (even moreso than Oakstar), and once that coping mechanism was taken away, she revealed how she truly saw the kits; they were objects for her emotional use. Not innocent individuals in their own right, but either representations of her brother Birchface or a symbol of his death. Perhaps the kits would've had a better chance to be accepted (or tolerated) had they not been the offspring of Birchface and Flowerpaw's (accidental) killer, but Frecklewish had no qualms taking out her emotional damage on them.

She projected so much hatred onto them due to their connection to Mapleshade and Appledusk that she would want them driven away into the storm. Possibly even watching them drown (I really think most of the cats wouldn't relish or enjoy the sight of kittens getting swept away to their deaths; it feels more likely that Freckle couldn't see through the rain, and failed to identify their fates, but we can't be sure since we only have Mapleshade's assumptions in the book).

As a headcanon, I believe Frecklewish simply filled herself with so much hate and anger that StarClan wouldn't let her enter. Especially not when she screamed at Mapleshade's kits.

Getting into StarClan seems to be act like a "trial," of sorts. If you can convince all of your ancestors that you're a good cat, you get to join them (which is why certain cats like Ashfur and Appledusk could get into StarClan). But if you convince everyone that you're not a good cat... Well, that may be a mistake that can leave lasting consequences for a long, long time.

(If it were ultimately up to me... I wouldn't have sent her to the Place of No Stars, but hey, we work with what we are given.)
