Thank you so much. That means a lot. I'm striving for that look with this project. I've made a few since, but this is probably my personal favorite. Just something about it.

I can actually see this design in an actual X game. He reminds me a bit of Hard Man

I love it whenever a Maverick design references a Robot Master's.
It wasn't necessarily intentional, but Hard Man may have been in the back of my mind. Either way I can totally see it, and I like it.

Megaton Hippo: I'm here to find the scrapheaps who killed my brother, Hippopressor, and chew tons of bubblegum. Β Wouldn't you know it, I'm out of gum.
Seeing this guy reminded me of the intro boss from Command Mission, so hope you don't mind that I had a little fun with this. XD

Nah it's cool.
I don't remember the intro boss of command mission though.
Of course, I don't remember too much from command mission. Doesn't help that it was stolen from me in a robbery years ago before I had a chance to beat it.

Hopefully you can find an emulator for either Gamecube or Playstation 2, or hope Capcom actually releases those games as virtual console games.

I still have my Gamecube, maybe I'll look into picking up a copy again someday.
It's not exactly a high priority though since I still have an immense backlog. So it'd probably be literally years before I got around to it anyway.

Love the concept here -- a bit more abstract than the elemental themes prevalent in so many other designs (not to say there's anything wrong with those, of course). Very much looking forward to how to choose to sprite him (I'm guessing bigger than Blizzard Buffalo).
π: 0 β©: 1
MarxForever In reply to ILKCMP [2014-07-10 09:37:51 +0000 UTC]
Quite a bit bigger actually. I'd say at least three times as large. Which is probably why I'm running into so much trouble spriting him, and why it's taking so long. I really want to get him done though, and it'll hopefully look as cool as I'm picturing it.
But yeah, I noticed how there's always that one Maverick with the not quite defined attribute that makes you go "huh? I wonder how he fights", when you read their names in the instruction booklets, or see them on screen for the first time; Boomer Kuwanger, Overdrive Ostrich, Neon Tigger. He was just my little way of trying to capture that nostalgic feeling.
People seem to approve though, I think he might be the most popular of the three I've got done so far.

Oh, you have the X cart? Lucky, that thing is so expensive now. At least I own the cart of my personal favorite X2, and that one's not exactly cheap either. But I still wish I had X3, I never got it for myself because I had friend I could burrow it from. A friend who decided to pawn it the second it was worth more than 100 dollars...
Fortunately it's coming to the Wii U virtual Console next month.

ILKCMP In reply to MarxForever [2014-07-10 19:30:40 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I was lucky enough to get the game about a year or so after came out. X2 and X3 I got years later for about $40 and $50, respectively. Even when I got them, circa 2000/2001, they were considered hard to find and expensive. Comparatively, very cheap to what they go for now, but as a 12-year-old, I shelled out a pretty penny!

MarxForever In reply to ILKCMP [2014-07-10 19:59:18 +0000 UTC]
Oh sorry, I meant to say "X3 cart" in that first sentence. The first X is pretty cheap and easy enough to come by. But yeah, $50 dollar for X3 today would be an amazing bargain. I keep garage sale and thrift store hunting, hoping one day I'll see it in a plastic bin for a dollar, that and E.V.O.
I also got my copy of X2 around that time, 2002 or 2003, and payed about $42 for it. Still, love it so much, I didn't even give it a second thought. If I knew it's be clearing about $250 now, I would've bought more...

Thanks. I'm a huge fan of your work by the way, especially your coloring style.
I'm trying my best to capture the look of the old Super Nintendo Maverick artwork for these initial pieces. So that's why I'm avoiding the use of gradients completely when coloring and shading, just like they did.
I must admit, it's really weird and I'm not use to it at all. But it's kind of interesting and oddly fun too.
When do I finally get all eight of these guys done, though. I think I'm going to do a huge dynamic group shot, using a coloring style that's much closer to ZX.

Wow... just... wow... seriously, if I didn't know better I would honestly believe this is some leaked footage of an upcoming sequel... but then again, it is actually better than some of the actual bosses (especially the X8 ones)... seriously, this is hands down a legitimate Maverick boss both design-wise and style-wise...
Hell, I had a few Mavericks of my own and wanted to post them at some point... but mine can't possibly ever compare to such greatness 8D

MarxForever In reply to LukeTheRipper [2014-04-20 01:30:04 +0000 UTC]
That's really cool to hear. I've been really trying my best to make these guys look as authentic as possible.
So thanks, really. And yeah 8 may have had some clunkers, but they do get serious points for Dark Mantis, and dropping those 3D segments.
But go! Upload your mavericks, seriously. Let people know how much we love this franchise!
I'm sure they're great.
