Description Canon EOS 6D | EF 17-40 f/4L, 20mm | 180s | f/11 | ISO 100 | Lee Big Stopper

An older image back from my weekend out in WV back in June. A reminder to myself to get back out there and get shooting and stop making excuses.

Visited Elakala fall, and a little ways down the stream we encountered two swirls in the water right next to each other, so I got out my big stopper to take some long exposures. The swirls to me always looked like a couple hurricanes right next to each other.

I was never quite happy with any of the edits I made, but I still wanted to share, a small amount of vignetting really helped this image stand out to me.

Opinions and thoughts always welcome!

Thanks! I debated about this shot for a while because I felt it was always too busy, but the swirl was really too awesome to ignore forever.

I loved these two swirls! It was the first time I'd ever seen dueling swirls before. I think both the Big Stopper and the vignette helped this image out tremendously. I wasn't happy with any of my results. Probably should have taken you up on that offer to borrow the Big Stopper!

Heh, to be honest, I too wasn't sure how I felt about these. However, due to life, I haven't been out shooting for months, and now that it's winter, I am not sure when I will head out again (maybe just force myself) so I have been going back through the archives and determined it was time to give this shot another try. I am pretty happy with the way it turned out, although not one of the best shots I have ever taken.

I haven't shot anything here since summer ended. I've only shot on the west coast, haha! The winter doldrums are back, not to mention, yeah life has been crazy!

Yea, I bought a house, was traveling for work, lost my job, and just havent been in the mood since. I may try to force myself to get out there, but I just dont know what I would shoot or where I would go.

Oh no! Sorry to hear about the job, but congrats on the house.

I want to find some place to go when everything freezes over this week, but I haven't figured that out yet either. I'd love to go up to Blackwater, but I know the roads will be in terrible shape.

Yea... well, I may make a trip out to Shenandoah soon for the same reason. I would love to catch the valley covered in fog, but that is pretty hard to catch. I actually went up there for some snow and ice last winter and ended up posting none of the images because they just weren't good. May try again and see if I can catch some better light.

It's really tough to get good snow/ice images without the right light. I haven't quite seemed to find the right combination yet, but so far it has eluded me!

I need to get back out to Shenandoah and shoot. It's been probably 5 years since I was last out there, and I wasn't really looking for anything other than waterfalls at the time, and on a limited schedule. I always love the images I see from that area. I'm wondering if spring is a good time to shoot there?

Spring is a great time, you can get some wildflowers and blooms on the trees, but the green just flows on forever. The difficult part about Shenandoah is that specifically from Skyline drive you are limited to either viewpoints or hikes, most of which are at least somewhat difficult since you will find yourself walking up or down mountains. There are a few shorter hikes that I like, but I have not attempted any of the longer ones due to not being in great shape. The waterfalls in the park... well I don't know much about them other than the fact that the waterfalls that are fairly easy to get to are usually very heavily visited.

Beside that, I mostly visit the central section of the park, and sometimes the northern section. But if you want to come otu on out in the spring and are looking for someone to shoot with, always a good excuse for me to get out there! (Plus I will probably pick up another annual pass so I could get you into the park for free).

That was exactly my experience when I went to the waterfalls there. They all seemed to be popular swimming holes in the summer. I even saw a girl fall over one...she wasn't trying to swim. The group she was with had to get a rope to haul her back out of the gorge.

That would be awesome if we could go shoot together in the spring. I know absolutely nothing about the area, so any help would be appreciated!

Excellent, I will look forward to it! I may do some scouting/shooting before hand and maybe find a few new spots that are worth visiting.
