An updated version of one of my shots from my trip to Tahiti and New Zealand back in May of last year. Been learning some new processing techniques and decided that many of my images could benefit from the new techniques as well as a new critical eye that fits my personal style better than before. I have found I can squeeze even more detail out of my images, and I am getting more colorful images with that "pop" that was lacking before. With this particular image, I feel I have been able to really pull more colors out of the sky and water, while really preserving the great texture in the sand. Overall, I think this image much closer resembles what I felt when taking it, and I think it is a more pleasing image. I hope you enjoy! Now on to the story of the image.

Traveling to Tahiti from the Washington D.C. area is no quick and easy task, after flying to L.A. and spending the night, we embarked on the 8 hour flight to Tahiti. We arrived late at night, on a different day, who knows how many time zones over. Tired and jet lagged, we rented a car and tried our best to make our way to the hotel. After getting a bit lost and driving right past the hotel, we finally figured it out and attempted to turn in for the night.

Due to the rather extreme jet lag, I woke up at 4 in the morning on our first day there. Rather than try and go back to sleep, I decided it was the perfect opportunity to break out my camera and get to shooting.

In the pitch dark I attempted to make my way down to the beach to see if there was anything of interest to photograph. As beautiful as the place was, I was so very tired and struggled a bit to find something to photograph. Afterall, I was on a beach, it was pretty much just sand and water. I walked for a bit and found some stones scattered on the beach near the edge of the water that had created some rather great texture due to the waves washing the sand away around the rocks.

After trying to shoot the beach with the stars for about 40 minutes, I came back to this spot as the sun was just beginning to illuminate the sky on the horizon and framed the rocks with a nice hill in the background. The original edit was very much a nice pastel piece of art, but this new edit is so much more vibrant and alive, and really captured the spirit of the place.

Definitely some great texture in the sand...and love the color you managed to pull out of the sky. Looks like it wasn't the most explosive sky to begin with, but you definitely brought out what was there!

Thanks LeeAnne! Was definitely more of a pastel colored sunrise as opposed to an explosive one.
