You sure that 'it' isn't another trainer? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I always go by the dorsal fin. Males have a bigger, more straight one than females.

yes, i was there. there was only one trainer.
at the time of the photo, the whale was 7 or 8 years old, so not yet a fully grown adult. but it's definitely a big boy.
the photo was taken at Marineland near Niagara Falls. I'm sure you can find more info on that particular whale

Well I'm Australian, so I can't get anywhere close to Niagara Falls. I don't doubt you're right though, especially since you were there yourself.

No, it's female. As Smoke-Gatedrifter said, the dorsal fins are almost always bigger and straighter, and it would be flopped over (captive males have a 100% "flop" rate).

I'm pretty sure that's Kiska, as she lives alone at Marineland....

Sorry that I'm comming back at this
But Ikaika is a male, and he knows that very well

Its also true that wen they make a bend like that, the first part of their penis sticks out

AAAAHH I haven't been to Marineland since I was 8 years old!! I remember people could touch and feed the orca's. Are people still able to do that? Or has it been discontinued due to safety regulations? This is a spectacular shot!!!!

masta-wpk In reply to SilverSoulArtist [2012-10-04 10:29:37 +0000 UTC]

No, unfortunately people can't touch orca's anymore but it's still fun to see 'em there

This is such a beautiful shot, how did you get this kind of angle? were you as close as it looks?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

masta-wpk In reply to Britannia-Orca [2011-11-04 11:22:28 +0000 UTC]

well, the camera setup is a D700 with a tamron 70-200 f/2.8 lens. i was pretty close to the whale...maybe 4-5 meters away. when it jumped, i realized i can't "fit" the whale into the shot, so i tilted the camera and that's how i got it
