One of your best portraits for so many reasons. You've mastered the art of suggestion, allowing the eye to fill in that which is expected, but remains almost invisible against and gradually emerges from the black background. That darkness blends in and out of the figure so well in subtle gradations of gray that the figure is more like the recollection of a fine painting than a photograph. It is difficult to retain so much resolution of detail in dark monochrome and this is where an imaginative eye has only to accept that it is there. This, I believe, is as close as any photograph can be to a fine painting without bearing Goya's signature.
