HaHa. Funny thing is, you'd most likely want a crude weapon such as a "hammer" in a sword fight... it penetrates armor a lot better then a blade... warfare has never been civilized, even though at times it tried to be.

Thought that was a hammer for a second; was wondering what he was going to build.

Amazing work! Love it! As for the colour of the surcoat, in 1259 Pope Alexander granted the knights (in contrast to the seargant brothers) to wear a red surcoat instead of a black one in war (they still wore black on a daily basis though). 20 years later I think the right to wear a red surcoat passed to the seargants as well.Β

Thanks a lot! I always loved complicated history like that... did the color regulations extend to the Knights of Malta as well?

This is very cool - I like how authentic and slightly ragged his attire looks - you are, of course, correct regarding the original colours of Hospitaller's tunics. The red one looks cool as well though - well done!

Thanks a lot! I'm feeling a push to do more medieval art lately. I really love representing the historically accurate armors of the era. So many people are lazy when it comes to that, I tend to get quite agitated.

Very nice! And the raven's beak too. Have you ever seen the Towton skeletons? General consensus in the middle ages seemed to be: aim for the face. Brrrrr

The Towton skeletons are a gruesome sight indeed. I love how people think that the sword was the most common weapon on the medieval battlefield... there were plenty of 'less beautiful' ones out there.

They used anything they could get their hands on and was easy to use. The same axe that felled trees, felled men just as easily. I believe the the poleaxe was the most common weapon in those times. And halberts... king Richard III had the back of his head sliced off with one amongst other wounds to the head and face. Though they might have carved him up after he was dead/down.
Archers would have a shortish sword besides their bows. If you ran out of arrows, you'd be left with just a bendy stick. Long range in military archery basically means anything beyond the tip of your sword.

The halberd seemed like one of the more proficient weapons of the era... or any pole arm for that matter.

The Visby skeletons are awful too. But very interesting as these men were buried in their armour instead of looted.

Once again one can see how most wounds were directed at the face. It gives us a rare look at the actual armor... they say the Danes were so well equipped they didn't need anything extra.

If they made an assassins creed where the main character is a knights templar, I think this is what it would look like. Incredible!

An assassins creed game about the Templars would be quite a change up I think. That would be cool.

I prefer the black and white, to be honest. The red surcoat kinda makes them look like an inverse of the Knight's Templar colors.Β

Yeah, I've just always liked the knights of Malta. Probably because one of my mentors as a child was from Malta. I've always felt like I had a connection to that place.
