Lights on the Beach 2023

3RD PLACE!

Richard began to take notice of the pause in his appearance from shows and the slowing trickle of seeing new faces in new places. King sat restless in his stall, perking his head up whenever he heard the truck and trailer come near the barn hoping for something new. Alas, he had watched another leggy Donstrupper pass to fill the space he so desparately wished to fill.

Suns rose and fell. He took to socializing with Autumn as she had furthered in her pregnancy, finding comfort in her shared frustration of being stall-stuck. King neglected to share what else nagged and ate at him inside. How it felt as if he was slowly fading away from Richard's heart, becoming decreasingly less important with each Donstrupper that emtered into the stable. This he confided in only to the large oak tree at the corner of his favourite pasture.

Another sun rose and he could barely muster the hope that this time the trailer would be there for him, ear flicking to the direction of the truck idling outside the barn doors. He noted the footsteps approaching, anticpating they would continue to walk past his stall door and heaved a solemn sigh.

"King.."

The chestnut looked to the human silhouette at the door, matching blue eyes meeting each other and communicating a thousand sorries. Rick lifted his trailer halter for him to see and watched as his old friend shed the dust of two years cooped in boredom and despair. King moved towards the door, eager for the exit of this cage and Richard obliged. The morning light bathed his stale muscles and old bones in a soothing warmth he had been unfamiliar with in these disjointed days. With the drive to Florida, the lights passing through the trailer windows, he began to find a forgiveness to a friend he thought was lost.
