It might not help much physically, but emotionally? I'm sure people suffering right now may feel at least a little spark of happiness in knowing so many people are caring about them and their loved ones.
As for donating? How do you know he hasn't already? And some people are going through their own personal crisis right now, and praying is all they can give.
Don't believe in praying? That's okay.
Just please don't go around criticizing other's attempts at trying to help in any way they can.

The majority of Japanese people are admitted non-religious atheists. They're probably baffled at the craziness of foreigners, "praying" for them instead of actually helping.

As an atheist, I fail to see what good a few words before bed would do to a person trapped under the wreckage of his former life, freezing to death and unable to call for help. "God" won't pull him out from the ruins. "God" will not provide him with a blanket to keep him warm and a place to stay. "God" will not feed him, nor will he help him rebuild his life. Your oh so precious god doesn't help anyone. Do you really care about the victims of Japan's earthquake? Stop praying and do something.

I am not religious at all.
And I agree, the best way is to actually do something about it instead of praying.
But what if a person doesn't have any money to spare at all? What if a person can't help?
Shouldn't they still be able to pray for better times without being so criticized?
To each his own.
I know, I sound very preachy, even to myself, but I hope you get what I'm trying to say in the least offensive way possible.

Yeah, but most people uploading pictures like these take the photos with the most expensive camera they could find, with an even more luxurious lens, so that the word "pray" will look exactly like they wanted it to.
I've also been called insolent, rude and ignorant when declining the offer to pray along with some of my friends for japan. None of those who called names believed that they had to do more than kneel on cold stone floor and utter silly words in order to "support" japan and her people.

For those who are spiritual, they do not believe that simply praying will get anything done either.
It even says so in the bible.
You can pray for god's ASSISTANCE and then get up and do something.
No need to be rude.

I totally agree with your comment. Everyone's like, "pray for Japan, pray for Japan", but pray will not make anything. We should actually DO something for the VICTIMS. Japan is not the victim here, anyway.

I'm Japanese too, but I don't think that means anything, especially since you're not the one in trouble; don't talk for those who just had their homes destroyed. This was never even about insulting others. It's not about you. It's about the people who are facing crisis right now, and best way to help those who need it.

Fuidama [2011-03-15 20:59:02 +0000 UTC]
Praying won't help those in critical need right now. You're not thinking rationally if you really believe that. Donations to Redcross (you can either donate on their website or via iTunes) to provide food, water, and clothing for those who can't even get a meal tonight will. Right now most importantly people in Sendai need resources. Think about it...if you were starving, cold, and haven't drank anything in days, would you rather someone be praying for you or someone bringing food/water/blankets to you? You are naive and sheltered if you believe you would turn down the latter in such a situation.

1) Many who are more religious than I do believe praying helps, and believe that asking God - or whatever deity they pray to - to help will do more good than simple cash donations. Whether or not this is true is not for either of us to say.
2) Just because someone prays, doesn't mean they do so to the exclusion of donating funds.
So, you know, maybe stop being a dick to people who are genuinely concerned for the safety of others and doing what they believe is the right way to help.
Jesus.

That wasn't my intent. I have no interest in insulting others like how you just did to me. I just want people to understand that if they sincerely want to help, wishing upon a star will not provide funds/resources/etc; that's an objective truth.

PeregrineStudios In reply to Fuidama [2011-03-17 01:18:41 +0000 UTC]
Unfortunately, it's not. While I understand your point of view that praying won't do shit, and I share it, neither of us can know whether praying actually will, in fact, help. To claim that it absolutely, objectively will not help is to claim that all religion is bogus and there is no God, and that is not a claim that anyone can empirically make.

Absolutely. Such a view is "agnostic." But in any case, I only feel gratitude for those who wish the best for this disaster which only seems to be getting worse as the days go on.
