Description Commissioned painting of Sansa and Sandor from Chapter 18 of "A Clash of Kings" by George R.R. Martin.

Originally, this piece was rejected, because I failed to capture the correct atmosphere which my client was looking for. The main problem being the light-source, which my client would have liked me to change to overhead lighting or full daylight, but this would mean repainting the whole piece, for the light and shadows on the characters' faces would change.

This is something I could not do, hence we originally agreed on a refund and the commission was automatically rejected. My client, however, really liked the painting nonetheless, so after some deliberations we came up with a solution that was satisfactory to them and I was able to implement them without necessitating a complete repainting of the piece.

So I am super happy to announce that this is now a fully finished and accepted commission.

Yaaay! 。(⌒∇⌒。)

Thank you all for your support, and many thanks to A. for their patience and understanding of my limitations.

My client requests that you please no repost the painting, and if you wish to reblog/share it, then please use this link: thestrangerskiss.tumblr.com/im…

Wow, this is gorgeous. I think it's great that he looks a bit younger. If I remember correctly, he's only in his late 20s in the books? Love this.

Thanks, but this was a commissioned painting, and the person commissioning it wanted me to draw his face thus. This is absolutely not at all how I imagine Sandor. It's how the commissioner viewed him.

Also, I'm glad things were well arranged with the original commissioner. These things happen.

He is 27 in the second ASOIAF book where this scene is, so he's the correct age here.

cahenri In reply to Aesara-Dayne [2015-03-24 17:23:02 +0000 UTC]

As I said – a little too young. In the Middle Ages people at the age of 27 looked older. They had had not easy life actually. But anyway I like your art. It's vivid.

Aesara-Dayne In reply to cahenri [2015-03-24 19:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I disagree actually, I've for long been studying the Middle Ages before I ever read ASOIAF and have asked this very subject to a few historians. That perception that people of that period looked older isn't accurate.

Besides, Sandor lived in the court of King's Landing for most of his life, is that a "hard life"? He's a nobleman, and has had the life of a nobleman, not the hard soil-tilling life under the sun of a peasant, which would've been what could've aged anyone. People of the era could look either younger or older than their ages depending on nutrition, skin care, social status, life experience, any of the same factors that make modern people look younger or older than they are. And aside the historical inaccuracy of saying people of other eras looked older by default, there's something more important: the books. The actual text doesn't say Sandor looks older than he is, and there's no real reason to assume that he does. The only one for which there's clues that he looks older than his age is Littlefinger, who at 29 has already white streaks of hair on his temples.

I’d wished for an artwork by you since I first spotted your ample portfolio ages ago, and after patiently awaiting my turn in your years-long waiting list, it was thrilling to finally get to this work. You worked so industriously to deliver this piece, polished it and added your personal touch.

The modification rendered a result that’s entirely as I wanted, the dimmer atmosphere enhances that much sought-after intimacy. Sansa looks beautiful and more refined, and that dress was always a great choice from the very start. And Sandor . . .  I don’t know what’s it about him, but he seems to always end up stealing the thunder even without meaning to! His expression practically says it all.

For this excellent work and your perseverance, you have my deepest thanks and appreciation, Mathia!

Uh, maybe its just me but I wouldn't reject a commission because the lighting isn't exactly how I pictured it. I mean seriously, you aren't psychic, the fact that you can take vague descriptions and turn them into works on incredible art amazes me. I don't really know how to feel about the idea of rejecting a commission which for all intents and purposes is complete. Doesn't seem right to me. Anyways beautiful piece, I love it.

Goodness... I never thought this would be blown out of proportions by people assuming the worst about the client, and it's quite depressing.

I was one of the clients who commissioned this specifically to Mathia, whom I've always admired and selected her precisely because of the style she has, which I love. It went very well, but in the finished painting, there was one thing she couldn't change and she amiably explained it to me, as I didn't know it couldn't be changed, and it was then that she decided to refund willingly, as she has been explaining so well. So why exactly are people assuming the client was some difficult bitch that used some random excuse to cancel at the last minute? Why is the client always blamed? Mathia and I ended this in good terms, and I still love her art, and as I've always told her, I think the painting is beautiful! I explained to her in details what my problems were, and that's information private between client and artist that I don't think should be disclosed. The light wasn't going to be changed because it's wrong or ugly or needed to be better or anything people are assuming so wildly and inaccurately, but because of a very specific detail only Mathia and the clients know and understand. I never faulted Mathia for this, and she doesn't fault me either, otherwise why would she be so patiently and kindly explaining here and allowed me the use of the piece?

People should read more carefully. Not all "rejections" have stories of drama and strife behind it, some end well, believe it or not. To come and see so many saying these things is really discouraging to me and makes me wonder if it's even worth pursuing commissions anymore.

Anyhow, thanks for the effort in explaining, Mathia.

I don't see why you're so upset at others comments to the point of not commissioning anymore art for your enjoyment. People are going to assume. Whats important is what you and the artist already conversed about and agreed upon. Who cares what others think. Let them be drama queens. lol

You can never be in someone's head and predict everything they have envisioned. And some people are hard or impossible to satisfy. The piece is perfect! I might think different if I knew the characters or the scene, but from purely artistic point of view, it's perfect!
