Download is a little bigger in rez.I want to like Mari, but she feels like they took crazy Asuka from the EoE movie and made her into a meganeko (which isn't bad or anything). Also feels like she was thrown in, and I'm waiting for her to blend in and fit with the situation and characters more. So I guess the reason I like Mari is because she feels so Asuka-y to me. To me, the four main gals in Eva can be summed up like this:
Asuka = tsun tsun (slight dere)
Rei = Robo-girl, quiet (I dislike her, but I actually like her more in the new movies now)
Misato = lively yet serious, mature
Mari = laid back, assertive, possibly animal-esque (smells things, wild in battle, etc)

i would agree with your conclusions, though i like rei more than most of the other characters... in order i would have to say NGE asuka, then RoE rei and mari... shinji was WAY too annoying in the original NGE series, but with the Rebuild of Evangelion he is back in my good graces...

a shallow interpretation of rei. I dont think mari is the laid back kinda character, assertive and a little crazy, kinda cocky.... neways love the comic.

she's actually quite fascinating, i've done my research. besides most people dissmis her as a soul-less doll and nothing more, its a little irritating.

I'm sure if this happened in the show it would lighten it up more than a tad. Your work has grown (no pun intended at all) over the years! You're going to have a career in anime or manga for sure!

They fact that Mari is just kinda hurled into the world of Evangelion is illustrated very nicely by her first encounter with Shinji. There he is laying on the roof of the school with his walkman, a scene all us Eva fans are familiar with. Status quo, status quo, status quo, status quo, "GET OUTA MY WAY" NEW CHARACTER STATUS QUO MEANS NOTHING!

I liked her somewhat, but she gets a hell of a lot of attention for how little actual screen time she got. her battle scenes were still good though.
Wonder if a gruesome fate awaits her like EoE Asuka....

I guess it's because she's new. And sometimes characters are popular even though they've only been on for the briefest moment (see Kaworu).

There is definitely not enough expansion stuff with the Evangelion girls out there.
I've got 1.11 and 2.22 sitting on my shelf right there, waiting to be viewed, but I also have another pile of DVDs sitting right under them I have yet to see.

Really just got to wait until 3.0 to make too much judgment, there's not much to her yet. I am a sucker for meganeko, and the ballistic attitude towards that one angel was absolutely lovely in my opinion.

Mmmm.... I kinda want to like Mari too but I haven't been swayed in either direction yet. Still kinda neutral on her, cautious cause she's an unfamiliar element in a familiar territory for me. THE BEAST thing in the movie made me lol a bit though cause she kinda just... got beat down anyway lolz.

Haven't watched 2.0 yet, but Asuka without the crazy just isn't Asuka. And we all love Asuka, for reasons that can only be described as masochistic. So I don't know how to feel about Mari.
It's nice to have a glasses-girl, though.

I friggen hated this character. She's too much of a jerk and not in a way I can enjoy like Asuka. I guess i sortof felt like I was trying to be pandered to with this kooky insane character with no likeable traits, that people would all like anyway because its an anime.

oh...i dunno. i guess jerk is the wrong word. more that she's just one of those characters that seemed to be a sociopath for the sake of being a sociopath....i don't care for characters like that too often. they made her all weird and violent but didn't really give her any traits that seemed likeable to me....that, and how she replaced asuka in the final battle seemed unnecessary.

Well, you're not the only one who feels like EoE Asuka and Mari resemble each other.
There's even a theory that claims that Mari is the EoE Asuka transported into the future (Part of the Rebuild is sequel to NGE theory).
I call bullshit on that one, but the fact that they resemble each other enough that they're willing to believe alternate time theories about it says a lot...
I say people over-analyse this stuff.
Mari is probably just a side product of making the characters more stable and having no excuse to have Asuka go apeshit for a while. And hey, ZA BEASTO was pretty cool.
