A few people have been asking about what Shantae looks like in her mermaid form. Based on the sprite we did for the lost GBA game, she'd be something like this sketch...kinda swampy and monster-like, not the traditional fleshy on top variety. I threw some color behind it to help explain. The hair was pinned up so that we wouldn't have to use direction sensitive hair animations.Related content

In Risky's Revenge, she can fire bubbles that explode when they hit something after she gets the Mermaid Relic.

very cool :3 ive always wanted to play this game :3 I tried an emulation of it but it was glitched as all hell so im still lookin for a copy......or I could just get it on the 3DS store when I eventually get the handheld.

I like she doesn't look like Ariel (the Disney mermaid princess). Like you said, making Shantae with a kinda swampy appearance instead of the traditional. Awesome work and a even more awesome game! X)

You know in the DSi game was I think the first time I played as a mermaid in a game. I think it was my fav of the three forms in the game. But only after the attack power up.

This was such a fun surprise in Risky's Revenge. I was expecting, say, a dolphin form (in keeping with the full-animal transformations). But I looooove this form and look! Really well done. Very happy this game has seen the light of day! Bring on Shantae 3DS!

Oh o.o This one is very interesting. You picked your colors quite nicely. Your sketching remains in tack while the coloring remains smooth. What attracts me more are the hair shines you added in. Really difficult for me any my own mermaid drawing. Good work^^

OMFG!
This is gorgeous! I remember when it was going to be my ninth or tenth birthday(I'm 18 now 0.o) and all I asked for was Shantae for the GBC and when I got it I was so damn happy and quickly put it into my GBA. I played it all day long and pretty much ignored everyone and their gifts that day lol. If you know me yo know I'm an obsessed mermaid freak(a Mermaholic lol). I buy every single game that has a mermaid in it, since I love video games and mermaids, anything from Puyo Puyo,Valkyrie Profile,Mermaid Prism to Mist of Chaos,Tactis Ogre and too many more lol. So when there was news of a new Shantae game and one of her transformations being a mermaid I was ecstatic and tried to get the latest news and screens. Finally I get to see what would've been....she's gorgeous...(how depressing). Well I'll keep my hopes up that this game will see the light of day! I cant wait until the WiiWare title is released and I'll probably continue to replay Shantae until then.

Gosh Funkmaster! You like mermaids a lot. I did a "just for fun" mermaid game with my buddy Jones back in the olden days of internet. Its called "Mermaid Shooter", and I hear its been played millions of times all over the world. But, we never put a title screen or credits on the game, so it was never able to be credited to WayForward, though its technically our most played game. If you are a huge mermaid fan, do a google search and I'm sure it will turn up. Be warned: its not "good", just mildly entertaining.

When I was a kid I didn't have a doll house, I had a mermaid house. Which basically was a doll house glued on top of a bucket so the mermaids would have a pool.
That game reminds me of the Nazi Manatee Hunter game my friend Jason and I made. Well, I drew the pictures, he put it all together. It was an awful game, but really entertaining.

You know how some of the monster death animations are them expoding (non violently, of course) into a pile of bones. Is that a Secret of mana refrences perchance?

Exploding into bones is more of a Castlevania nod. "Nod" is an industry term which in fact means "theft".
