lol His dream came true. He IS tv. I like the positioning of things on this one, especially the way you drew the remote falling out of wreck gars hand. It helps add a feeling of movement. You can just see the stages. Flipping on tv, setting up camera, seeing his own face ON the tv, look of astonishment, drops remote, settles into contemplative stupor of existential introspection.

Thank you! Yeah, when I was looking for reference and saw Wreck-Gar watching that TV in an actual episode, I knew it was the one for this pic. It adds to the Junkions' weirdly anachronistic charm. Especially because logically they must have built this giant thing in imitation of a human TV set.

Hi Astro-L,
Long time no see! I hope all is well?
First of all I think this is a interesting Wreck-Gar artwork based on the cool Reveak the Shield toy designed! The perspective is good as we can tell we are watching from below and facing up to the tv with some nice background texture implying it is planet Junkion? This artwork reminds me of the G1 episode "The Big Broadcast of 2006" and how Wreck-Gar loves his tv shows which makes him who he is. Like the artwork and colours in general I saw the difference in your first attempt and see the improvements. Really great job and to see you again!

Hey JP, life's actually a little crazy right now, but I gave myself time to do a TF pic, and that's always good for the sanity. That is indeed Junkion, and in fact I was using that episode specifically for background reference (though the TV is based on this scene in "The Killing Jar" ). Thanks for commenting - I'm glad you like it!

Thanks! I actually made a choice there, between capturing that little bit of motion in the moment he's hypnotized vs. showing a sign of him having been like that for a long time. I was thinking of having cobwebs coming off of him with a little mechano-spider, but I'm a sucker for frozen instants so I went with the falling remote. Glad you like it!

Okay, cool. So you know that Wreck-Gar only thinks in terms of what he sees on TV. Well, what happens when what's on TV... is him? I figure something like this is going on in his brain.

As always, infinitely faveable work, my friend. The expression of your talent grows more impressive with each increasingly painterly offering. I get a very sort of eerily-cozy feel from this one, not a million miles removed from the atmosphere of a lot of the old anthology series, like THE TWILIGHT ZONE, THE OUTER LIMITS, and ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS. As an illustrator in the '50s of posters and the like, you'd have been HUGE, Matt.

Thank you! Yeah, I love me some old pulp sci-fi book covers. I consider it high praise to be compared to that era. Speaking of painterly sci-fi, I was reminded of your "Art of Cybertron" project when I was finding reference images for Junkion. I know I've said it before, but if you ever feel like tackling something like that again, I'd love to see a repository of other TF worlds. Junkion backgrounds are pretty diverse between episodes, and I didn't expect my favorites to be in the AKOM-made "Big Broadcast of 2006". The character animation is at AKOM's usual low standard, but the backgrounds have a fantastic gestural, brushstrokey rawness. Maybe being done cheaply was a good thing, forcing the painters to turn their pictures in before they had a chance to overwork them? Whatever the case, discovering those gems hidden in plain sight felt like finding lost Christmas presents behind the couch in April.

MattDrawsRobots In reply to JZLobo [2011-07-26 23:26:17 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I came up with the idea back in... '01, maybe? '02? Pretty sure it was when I was brainstorming ideas for the Generations artbook. Anyway, long enough ago that neither reality-TV nor Web 2.0 were yet the cultural steamrollers they are today. I won't go so far as to say I was being prescient, but I'll at least say that time has only made this image more relevant.
Also yeah, you do want that toy. It's so awesome.

Good eye! It's actually the prototype version , before he got the safety-orange treatment due to his "stun weapon" mode. That was the first image of him I'd ever seen, and I thought he was a great updated homage to his G1 self... so when his final colors were revealed, I was disappointed. I'm glad to have found a way to give that early version a bit of life here. Thanks for letting me know you dig it!
