Description A year ago, on May 31st, I witnessed the beautiful Campo Colorado Tornado. The view I had however, was the backlit side of the twister. Most everyone else on the chase was on the other side of the funnel and witnessed it as a white tornado with a beautiful blue sky behind it.

I was still miles away when I shot this at 200mm. I was jumping up and down in excitement because I figured with only five days to chase, and this being my next to last day out, that I wouldn't see anything more than a severe storm. I'm sure glad I was wrong!

Do you know this tornado's rating on the Fujitsu scale? Because I do know that size doesn't matter. Anyway, nice picture. I love tornadoes.

Yeah, I've posted this everywhere I can. It's funny, but I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who caught it from this angle… most people caught the spectacular images from as close as 100 yards away from the West… I got there a little late, and got what I could before it dissipated.

Glad to meet you!

It was about 5 miles away and moving at about 5 mph, so truth be told, it wasn't all too scary in person… but the clouds directly above me, dark and swirling did cause me to pause...

That was an amazing tornado, being such a large, photogenic, relatively long-lasting funnel over sparsely populated terrain and beautiful skies. Magnificent shot.

It was long tracking enough for me to watch it drop from 40 miles away and still make it in time to shoot a few closer shots with a wide angle lens. A fantastic twister! Thanks!

Yeah, the colors are certainly reminiscent of that time of year… and tornados so happen in the fall… but it was all due to my being on the wrong side of the funnel cloud (thank goodness it was a slow moving one!).

holy crap that is AWESOME!! glad to hear you were MILES away! I love the orange sky and the darkness of the clouds, it makes it more severe and real!!!! gorgeous

MattGranzPhotography In reply to sugarcoat [2011-06-03 15:49:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, though I did eventually get a good bit closer, this image turned out looking far more violent and looks closer because of my using a 200mm lens to capture this while using a 12mm to catch my other images of this tornado.

Thanks so much!
