When confronted with aerial photos of the thing, a writhing mass all covered in spines, Bridget Young had remained stoic. Inwardly however, she knew she was in for a bad time. Headquarters had known it too, since they’d preemptively prepared an airdrop of supersized medical supplies for her, just in case. A bad time was the very definition of the job though, and the promise of a challenge, let alone pain, made Bridget all the more resolute as she entered the Ascension Chamber. Minutes passed within, and when she emerged, now transformed into a towering giant 36 times the size she had been, she was ready to get to work.

Every blow delivered upon the monstrosity gave a wound in return. Nicks, scrapes, and cuts, all superficial, but each inflicted without any conscious effort on the part of the beast. No, it just trudged along the city’s streets and consumed all in its path, unconcerned with the colossal woman that raged against it. Unconcerned until it suddenly was, that is, and then, alarmingly fast, it retaliated with a singular and precise riposte.

Bridget staggered backwards, while the thing merely continued on as if nothing had happened. The many small lacerations in Bridget’s skin each radiated pain, but this new one didn’t hurt at all. If not for the warmth spilling down her arm, she might not have even been aware that she’d actually been injured. The small voice in her ear called out, urgent but professional, “Fall back. First aid en route.” It went against everything she was to not press the attack with everything she had, but her handler, the voice in her ear, was right. There’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity, and Bridget wouldn’t be able to save anyone if she allowed herself to bleed to death.

With slow and steady breaths, and a scowl on her face, Bridget ducked onto a side street. All the while, the sounds of devastation echoed between the buildings around her as the monster proceeded deeper into the metropolis. “Supplies dropped,” came the voice again. Bridget only had to wait for half a minute, maybe less, but each second was agony. Not due to her wounds or the lessening of the feeling in her fingertips, but because somehow, the cacophony of structures collapsing and lives ending only seemed to get louder even as her enemy moved farther away. Bridget wrapped the gauze tight, popped a painkiller and a stimulant each half the size of a person into her mouth, then stood. This was far from over.
