Such a wonderful work, both from a technical and emotional point of view. Love how the mostly cool colour palette, alongside a subtle dark and light play, work together to bring forth a melancholic mood, really expressing the idea of a former knight's bittersweet thoughts at ending his life's mission of keeping people and the goodness in the world safe. I also feel that, despite the overall sad, goodbye forever tone of the painting, the beacon of light that is the city, shining bright in the middle of a downcast landscape, exists to point out that not all is lost, that the knight's efforts weren't in vain, and that hope, good people and ideas will continue to exist, preserving and taking the knight's legacy forward. Of course the technical aspects - expert play of values, textures, shapes and edges - also contribute to making this work an amazing one.
I feel this is such an expressive artwork, with such a wonderful message. For me at least means a lot, finding myself constantly in a similar role to both the knight and the city. It drives home the point, for me, that hope does exist in every fight, and that there can be a silver exit to any long, dark, perilous road. Thank you so much for reminding me this by sharing this wonderful work with us.
