Description As all fans of slightly creaky (but still jolly fun) coin-ops will know, this image is a spoofy thing based on Final Fight, the venerable arcade beat-em-up that explores the lighter side of brutal urban vigilanteism. It was created as a surprise present for Vince Suzukawa, a totally ace artist whose work can be viewed here: [link] (among other places), and it stars his characters Drake Braeburn (the dragon) and Cody Frost (the tiger) in the roles of Haggar and...erm...Cody. Yes.

Those who've played Final Fight may spot that Drake and Cody are mimicking the moves of their on-screen counterparts, and that the two bad guys are animal versions of villains from the game. The lion is based on Hugo Andore, the huge meat-headed wrestler bloke with the questionable dress sense, while the rhino is based on Bill Bull, the big fat beardy chap who always came charging onto the screen head-first (I thought turning him into a bull would be too obvious).

This was my first ever go at computer colouring, and I remain thoroughly pleased with it. The characters were drawn in pencil and pen, then coloured in Photoshop and pixellated to look like sprites, and the background was grabbed directly from an emulated version of the game. The lettering and energy bars, meanwhile, were cut and copied from screenshots and then painstakingly redrawn with a mouse. This was incredibly fiddly and made my fingers go numb.

Drake and Cody are the copyright of the splendid Mr Suzukawa. Infringey types will be clouted up the conk with a spinning lariat.

Hey, Matthew, have you heard of Violent Storm? I'd love to see your take on that game. (Specifically the heroes, Wade, Boris, and Kyle, as well as the knife-wielding female thug, Liza.)

I in fact hadn't heard of that one, but having looked it up on YouTube I have to say it seems like a right laugh. Terrific music, too. Possibly it's something I could consider for a future piece!

Likewise! Games like these were always topping fun at the arcade, especially when you were accompanied by chums for multiplayer shenanigans. A beat-em-up of this particular nature would most certainly have devoured all my available pocket change in double-quick time.

I really enjoy all these Beat-Em-Up pictures. [link]

I wonder why not many make these pictures. They are so fun to watch and gets you to think, what if that really was a video game?

That be great. ^^ Anyway, amazing artwork you did here.

My M the Magnificent -kangaroo - would fit right in. He's as strong as Haggar and has his stamina, agility and ,due to his smaller mass, faster.

MatthewSmith In reply to EmmetEarwax [2014-05-03 12:33:16 +0000 UTC]

Didn't one of the Streets of Rage games have a kangaroo as a controllable character in it? That was rather groovy.

We already have Paws of Fury, so why not?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatthewSmith In reply to Anomaro-Karisu [2014-05-03 12:32:23 +0000 UTC]

Crikey, I remember that game. My abiding memory is of the level with a precarious platform positioned on top of a mountain with an instant-death drop at either end, which Prince Leon the Lion would immediately hurl himself backwards off within seconds of the fight commencing.

The AI in Brutal: Paws of Fury was not quite the full shilling.

Keyotea [2009-09-07 01:01:02 +0000 UTC]

You forgot Guy. Also, Guy and Cody are medium weights in which they can do flips but, Haggar is a heavyweight and can't do that.
Still Haggar is powerful because of his wrestling moves.
The key to wrestling is using your enemy's power against them.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatthewSmith In reply to Keyotea [2009-10-22 20:50:50 +0000 UTC]

All entirely true. As for Guy, there weren't really any characters in the comic who'd have fitted into that role. And he was always a bit too orange for my liking, anyway. He was like a big kung fu carrot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Keyotea In reply to MatthewSmith [2009-10-23 12:52:42 +0000 UTC]

But, carrots are orange not red...unless you used some kind of dye in it...or there is some far off land where carrots are red.
In the game Pikmin they are blue.

One word... PERFECT.
It's a pity that anthro games are limited to the crew of a hedgehog who only jumps on robots.

MatthewSmith In reply to REV6Pilot [2009-10-22 20:46:11 +0000 UTC]

Many thanks indeed! And you're right, we could do with some new animal heroes with a bit more clout about them. Zany cool sneakers and a sardonic attitude aren't much help when you're being bashed off the screen by a 600lb rhino.

atlantart [2008-12-22 23:18:57 +0000 UTC]

A great concept! I love how you've almost 'ixellated' the characters to fit with the graphics, and even then stand out considerably. Very original.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MatthewSmith In reply to atlantart [2009-10-22 20:40:48 +0000 UTC]

Cheers! Regarding the pixelly effect, it took a while to figure out how "blocky" I could make the characters while still retaining a fair amount of detail, but I was pleased with the final result. Though, if you look closely, you may notice that the background pixels are slightly bigger than those on the characters. A bit of artistic licence on my part, there.
