You know what... Katara's a pretty strong gal. There are so many moments in the series where I am just in awe of her determination... and this one ranks pretty well on that list.

But, I've already talked about Katara's strength:

So, let us discuss the idea of Fate.

I think this concept (as old as storytelling itself) is used in a very unique way in the Avatar universe. Sure, fate is a real thing. Fate is what put Zuko in the Royal Family, tainting his beliefs and leading him down a path of anger. Fate brought Sozin's comet to the Earth, leading to pivotal points in it's history. Fate made Aang the Avatar, brought the gAang together. Fate brought these good people of the Earth Kingdom under tyrannical rule, and into this prison.

But Fate doesn't do everything.

Was it fate that Zuko chose to cast aside his royalty, his comfort, his family... to join the Avatar? Was it fate that Sozin and Ozai used the power of the comet to destroy whole nations? Was it fate when Aang chose not to kill... not even the Fire Lord? Was it fate that these Earth Kingdom peasants rose up and took back their freedom and homes?

Most definitely not.

I think the story of Avatar is teaching us something. We all have the monkeys on our backs that "Fate" left us... the prejudices, faults and situations that we cannot control. But, just because we have these issues doesn't mean we have to dwell under them.

Psychology calls this "Nature vs Nurture." The influences that develop our unique perspective and ideals. But, I think that scale is incomplete, flawed. It deals with our past and present, the effects of the outside world... with no thought to what will come in our future.

I believe we have one more thing which develops us, creates our character and determines our "fate." And, it's pretty simple... it's our "choices."

You have the power to choose your fate. Choose what you will do, where you will go, who you will become. If you want to be an artist, go do it. If you want to go to France for two years, learn another language and how to understand different people, go do it.

As Katara says "Your Fate is in Your Own Hands."
