Description It feels a little masochistic to be working on new drawings from the Jehol biota, knowing that the true coloration is apparently pretty easy to come by. Still, despite the fact that the color scheme could be disproved at any moment, here's a WIP of my stab at Shenzhouraptor (which has priority of name over the more familiar Jeholornis by a week or so).

Well, uhh.....does the pic of Jeholor....will, the pic of a Jeholornis still work if the tail were really bulked up by feathers? Mine does seem bulky becasue of it.

Would the feathers mask the S-shaped neck of it like it does to modern birds, like, I mean, birds now have apretty straight back and neck profile....just asking....

Yes, good observation. Depending on the posture, the s-curve in the neck would be hidden by feathers as in modern birds. This is shown firsthand in fossils like Microraptor, Anchiornis, Confuciusornis, etc. As for the tail, in some basal birds like Jeholornis and Microraptor, there don't seem to have been a lot of feathers on ost of the tail, aside from the losange-shaped plume on the final third. So it may have been rather skinny. This is compared to things like Archaeopteryx, Anchiornis, and Jinfengopteryx, which had dense feathers covering the entire tail.

Well, now anyhow, I use Anchiornis as my template for all external raptor and primitive bird features, but the tail....hmm...never really considered it so much.....should check out a pic of a fossil next time.
