not quite sure if i'm satisfied with all of the shaders...but for now, this will work. suggestions welcome..

thanks, those are actually custom mental ray shaders. kind of like the car paint shader with some ramps plugged in for added effect.

yeah, this scene had a simple hdri lighting setup (poly sphere with hdri surface shader)

i dont like the textures from the inside, but it is really great the modelling there.

This is fantastic.. ive just got hold of Maya7 and seriously want to get into it, but ive got 3d writers block when i go to model... i think ill stick to my psychedelic fractals and leave 3d to the experts

Its nice but i think you're kind of meshing the concept. You have the inside a pinkish natural color, while the outside is metal. I think the inside would look a whole lot nicer if it was some metal blocks or chromic-like material.
