Ultra Magnus is really a white Optimus Prime. Even before I saw that, I knew they were related. The colors and the head sculpt look almost the same.

I completely agree with this. It would be nice if they could just do ONE new figure sculpt (of a decent size) of G1 Magnus that isn't just Optimus painted white.

Yeah the trailer's actually pretty cool with those two missile launchers on it and all that stuff. And at least he doesn't randomly lose it time to time! I heard the G1 Vintage figure can actually carry some Autobot cars on it.

Sigh this make me thinkn when i was child. I had Ultra Magnus toy and Iw athe happiest perosn in the world. The once time while playing wiht my friend in a battle for conquer Greyskull castle from Barbie's happy campers(don't ask...please). I turned my attention for 3-4 second....and the cool white Optimus Prime truck was gone, only the armor and helmet left! Since then whenever i see a white optimus i feel a pain in my heart.

Magnus, seems to be a real...how do I put it... wuss as far as Autobot's are conserened,. I mean he runs around all cycle in battle armor w/big missles on it, never has time to deal with any situitions that arise, and always seems to have low self worth.
Or you could say that Magnus is the smartest Autobot, wearing protection and carring around heavy ordance, and not wanting to get involved in battles over his head/skill. But, one Bot's Smartguy is another's Wimpass.
P.S. He must be family to Prime or something, because look under the armor, DUH! And the fact that he was originally given the Matrix by the hand of Prime. Optimus's one great Bad Idea/decision. Hey it was made on his deathbed, so give him some slack...

Actually, there's plenty of theory about that - namely the Dion theory, the one that posits that Mags was reconstructed by Alpha Trion as Optimus and Elita-1 were.
Plus there's other continuities where they are unambiguously cast as siblings.

There may be merit to the family theory. In one fanfic I read, Ultra Magnus was Prime's brother. Guess OP got all the guts in the family -- um, figuratively speaking...
(On a related note -- in the same fanfic, Hot Rod was Prime's son. Which made sense that he would be the REAL next Matrix-bearer.)

On the subject of Mags/Prime theories, there's one about Magnus being the reconstruction of OP's best friend from before he became OP.
Plus RID had them unambiguously siblings.

Well, if you want to continue the family theory... Hot Rod has those cool tailpipe arm cannons right, and if he was Prime's son... Then would Optimus Primal be his great-great-great-grandkid? He originally had some cool arm cannons/shotguns. Just an additional thought

It dates further back than that - Ultra Magnus was based on a toy that was originally (in Japan) an upgraded Optimus Prime. It was a recoloured version of the Convoy cab with a car carrier trailer that converted into armour the cab-bot could be clipped into.
Then Hasbro made it a totally different character when TF:TM was made and a great many of the following continuities have never quite forgotten the original details of the first toy.
I remember them because one of my brothers owned that original Ultra Magnus toy and even then, I figured out quite quickly that the inner bot was an OP copy.
