I can't buy into this one. The colors of the green and the pink on the right hand side, even the purple, they are working. The texture and repetition of shape created by the circles is nice as well. The spider though becomes a bit lost to the process. It is unnoticeable and I do not think it would be missed should it be removed. It does nothing to attract the eye or move it on to something else. The blue works with the bright pink or the red, but I don't think it goes so well with the solid red spikes that mimic the shape and form of the tower beside them. I like the way you pieced the face together and I think the white drawn portion helps to balance the white of the clothes. I am wondering though what it is you are attempting to convey through the white dress and the lack of alterations you made to it.

My friend, Matt Spire has ALWAYS been the Master of Discordant Textures and once again proves he lives up to the title (which I just now gave to him). His art is always expressive enough that one can't help but delve into surmising exactly what is going on in each work. Having a primary background in literature, I often jump in without much hesitation, but am generally hesitant to divulge my personal feelings about a work as my own psychoses tend to flavor my opinions.
Suffice it to say that Matt is a very deep artist who works on several different levels in both his artwork and the psychological levels of each piece.
I won't pretend to "know" what Matt's intentions are with this work, but he generally includes a sense of urgency and danger with most of his paintings. I get a sense of "Little Miss Moffat" here as the subject figure is about to be visited by spiders from the upper, right corner and just above her right leg. The subject lady's skin has a mottled appearance and since her face is very obviously a "mask" of sorts it raises the question, "what happened to her and how does she look beneath the mask?" Of course my slight arachnophobia insists that she's perhaps been bitten already.
What I personally thought was a stroke of genius are the spires included in the subtle background. This would be recognizable as a Matt Spire work even had I not received the notification of his submission.
In all I find this work to be typical of Matt's work in that he successfully combines clashing textures and conflicting colors with a central figure in a way that captivates the viewer in a subtle web of wonder.
In the end, I personally just have to ask myself, is HE crazy or am I?
