I love the sense of shear power you capture in the muscles of the goat. What a beautiful animal! To place that in a field of flowers is even more natrualistic. Raw nature. Beastly and sublime. Over all good job. I would like to see more of the goats face towards me. But I understand why you wouldn't.

I also would have went for a bit more depth of field but that would have been risky with a moving animal. You probably made a good decision to catch what you could and not take the risk. I wonder how close you would recommend getting to such and animal. What's safe?

Still looks like a risky venture. Two things would have helped you here;
a greater depth of field. You can see by the focus of the flowers in the grass
that you focual point is not that bad. It needs to be deeper to take in the
whole goat. On a bright summer day you wouldn't loose too much light to open it up a little bit more.

And
the other thing that would have helped would have been a couple of ticks
faster on your shutter speed. I can tell from your other pictures in your gallery
that you don't need to hear this, though. That's the first thing that I do. Go to
the persons gallery. Then you can tell what's circumstantial and what's a skill
issue.

Thanks for your critique. I posted another version of this same Goat into my gallery. See if you prefer the other version....he is faced towards me. I would not approach one of these creatures but they certainly aren't afraid to approach you. I don't believe they are very dangerous as long as you don't provoke them.

No. This is my preferred version. I am just
thinking you see more of the goat if you see
a little more face - but the powerful shape
of the animal is more there in this version.

As for the saftey, I got to hand it too you -
those horns are pointed and even a friendly
tapp could be a problem as far as I can see.

Us photographers do some daring things to get
that picture. I can't watch my wife photograph
in the woods for this reason .

beautiful gallery. I'll be back to look some
more later.

I agree...if his head was turned toward me it would have been a more compelling shot for sure. Cheers!

The goat doesn't appear to be quite in focus, but that could be due to it moving. Or it could be too small to see the detail on his face. It’s hard to say. It's pretty amazing to get this close a view of a wild Mountain Goat, anyway. And the fact that you caught him in this field of flowers is a major bonus. Even the light is pretty nice. I'd like more of the environment in front of him, to get a sense of where he's going. This composition gives it a very β€œfrozen in time” feel. But, overall, I like it.

Hi Duck! I posted a different shot here of this same goat. Check it out.....I think it's a little better overall...let me know what you think. Cheers!

fully zoomed in 200 mm...kneeling on rocks in an awkward position with no tripod...yes it is the movement which did not permit total sharpness...probably the camera shake and the goat.

Yep. That's about what I figured

mattTIDBALL In reply to DuckOfDeath [2011-05-18 15:31:00 +0000 UTC]

Upon inspecting the higher resolution image it seems that everything is in focus...however there is a "softness" to this which is now really bugging me. I had the shutter at 1/8000. I did some reading and found out that the Canon EFS 18-200mm when zoomed all the way in to 200mm will produce "soft" images as opposed to crisp. In the aftermath of these realizations I will be saving my pennies for a 400mm prime and will be forsaking the "all round lenses" as they have their quality limitations. I know there are a few more factors involved here but better safe than sorry.

Yeah, pretty much every telezoom gets soft at the long end. Even Canon's $2300 70-200 F2.8 II

Hope he's not hangin' on someone's wall right now. It's nice to see one that's not shedding and shaggy looking. I think everything you did here was just right, depth of field etc. The slight blurring of chin whiskers I would account to as head movement and it just adds to the reality of the photo.

Glacier N/P is one of my favorite places on this earth.
I think this candid photo captures one of it's creatures quite well
in her mid day stole across one of those high meadows looking for
something tasty to munch on.

Being slightly out of focus adds to the feeling of movement of this
healthy looking high mountain creature for me.
