And hoo boy, I've seen THIS part in an uncounted number of fanfictions. Not that it's bad, but I've seen it a million times--Naruto reminiscing that he never noticed Hinata sooner.

Well, it was kind of obvious once you knew to look for it, and Hinata was likely hurt by his obliviousness and if there's one thing we know Naruto hates above all else, it's seeing the people he cares about hurting. Knowing that he was responsible for it is just salt in the wound.
Sometimes tropes are widely known because everyone knows them.
