Yeah, and it also started when he faced those other nin and he got scared. He knew he had to focus then, but he faced death on that bridge, and he simply wasn't ready for it. I mean, comedy aside, just look at the story POST-Zabuza arc, how Naruto became less selfish, and how his skill and strength began to leap and bound, and then consider how often he says he wants to prevent losing his friends. He was still immature, but far more focused.

Take cop shows as a relative comparison. Some cops, like Kate Beckett from Castle, she was set on another path, but when traumatised by her mothers death, she became a cop to (not only find her mothers killer but,) to protect the innocent. It's the same with batman, death pushes heroes to protect because they have seen what the worst can do.

ANd to me, Naruto was traumatised by facing not only the death of two enemies, but shown that enemies are a matter of perspective, as he ended up respecting them, and wondering why one would sacrifice themselves. He had a lot to deal with.

Yay for the Castle reference; that show restored some of my my faith in TV police drama. (That and Castle's daughter is one of the best TV teens ever.)

I know what you are getting at, and I can really support it. The Wave story arc in its clumsy, drawn-out glory is where Naruto's story really begins and sets the stage for everything that is to come. Kishimoto really smacked his hero with a brutal wake-up call beyond any run-of-the-mill C-rank mission.The scene at the graves was a clincher for me, as Kakashi for once got his nose out of the naughty book and explained to Naruto that Zabuza's path and POV was one that many ninja considered valid, but was not regarded as valid or inevitable at home in Konoha. But if one path is "wrong", does that make a "right" path possible, to end the current cycle of warfare among the villages that made tragedies like Zabuza & Haku possible? It's pretty deep ground for a fun ninja adventure story. Naruto's decision then to regard victory in a mission as something beyond "us alive, them dead" really decides his path. He grows up a lot in the aftermath, a lot more than his peers, although it will still take some time for him to distill his feelings into a coherent nindou. The dream situation and the implied setup for RTN's AU was so tantalizing in the possibility of additional insights that living parents could have given to him. Minato is the #1 advocate for the Will of Fire, and Kushina is a big-hearted woman who has had to overcome many painful sacrifices in her life. What could they have done to encourage him, or let him "see underneath the underneath"?

Just for fun, it's actually worth noting that the matter of Hinata & Neji is what lets Naruto take his first stab at putting thoughts to action, with Neji serving as the test run for Gaara. Hinata's thanks and encouragement to the still-uncertain Naruto fires him up, so she has truthfully been there for him from early on in the story.

yeah, Castle is awesome... *awaiting sept 28th for season 7* 

his daughter is mixed with me. she is awesome, yeah, but she also comes across as a manipulative spoiled brat sometimes. Yes, her dad is a child sometimes, but she takes advantage of him, and his good nature WAY too often. Especially in the last two seasons, though she did seem to calm down after Pi. thank god.  WTH were they thinking with Pi. he seemed like an interesting character, but because they utilised him for the sake of comedic drama, he seemed stupid to have.

and yeah, that whole mission was a crash course in growing up, and seeing the ninja world for how it is, and how he will come to live in it. As for his parents, for that to come true, they literally had to take away the thing that Naruto was proud of them for, their willingness to die to save those they care for, a staple at the core of his beliefs, and know they wouldn't is what eventually shook him out of his desire to stay.
