“Forget the cane, at least you made it out in one piece.”Or, what I think happened after Sly climbed down after beating El Jefe and no one can take it from me. For a game ostensibly about Sly meeting his family, it was strangely lacking in the family feels.
But Rioichi would absolutely consider Sly more important than a cane. It's ego-bruising to have it stolen, but it's still just wood while Sly is his descendant. Think of what it means for Rioichi to know that their legacy lasts throughout the centuries? Up until very recently, living as a Cooper didn't leave you with a very high life expectancy. The family line almost did get snuffed out before the series even started.
Sly isn't sure how he's supposed to respond because Rioichi has been fairly reserved up until now. Also, he hasn't been hugged by another Cooper in fifteen or so years.

Wow. This is really good. It makes me wish that something like this had happened during the game. Considering that Sly is a Cooper by blood, I could see Rioichi acting this way after the El Jefe battle. I also like how you made it look like Sly hands were shaking. Those few little lines just show that the hug has shaken him a little bit and he doesn't really know how to respond to how Rioichi is acting.

Given his age in Thieves in Time, my bet is that he's a dad already and his children have flown the nest by now. With Sly and the gang being younger than him, he's probably had enough experience.

Out of all the ancestors, Rioichi seems to care the most? He compliments Sly on his technique, shouts to watch out for the dragons and always waves at Sly before going off on his own. And the completely unnecessary move to grab Sly's wrist to help him on the top of the cage.
Makes me think he feels responsible for his descendant, being the elder one. Well, figuratively elder. Was born before Sly at least. Not sure about his actual age.

Rioichi does seem to care the most; but all care in their own special way, even Salim. Their hearts all are in the right place, they just different ways of showing they care.
As for Rioichi's age, according to the Sly Wiki he's 43 in 1603; so most likely he feels an obligation to help the gang out him being the "adult".

I see what you mean. To be brutally honest, I thought Rioichi was older than 43; I thought he was 48 or 49. His personality just seemed more mature and as if he had been through a lot of life experience, yet still in good health and physical shape to be capable of his thieving feats in 1603.

Oh man yes! They really needed moments like this in the game! I mean, sure, we had the co-op prison break with Tennessee, and the cute moments with Bob, but we needed more! I love this so much! All my feels! <3

You know what? I never even thought about that or that it was something missing before, but now you point that out, I do wish it happened.
Sure thing, I guess Rioichi is an orphan too, and the first reaction he had when he learnt that Sly was part of his family was "so you come from the future? Eh, I'm not alarmed about that"...
Even if an episode is short, Sly still gets to know each of his ancestors better. Before meeting them, I guess they were like models he had to follow, but then, when meeting them in person, this vision of them could have changed.
