Description
Agent Hyebin shivered against the winter air as she pulled down her thin black top. At least, she tried too. MML uniforms were made more for stealth and seduction than combat, and showed far too much skin (and hinted) at even more to be useful as protection from blows by fists or freezing wind. She even still had her bracelets on! Like they would be helpful in a fight.
But, there was nothing for it. She knew that it would be impossible to talk down her target, even when that was her usual way of doing things. The problem with mind control is that you can't just manipulate someone out of it with wits and wiles. And they hadn't been able to find the source. She'd sent one of the best, Agent Daisy, and she'd never returned. So, every other option was a no-go.
At least she knew that brute force was a valid strategy. After Agent Taeha was lost she'd found her and restrained her after a quick fight. Now the brainwashed agent was in custody while Agents Ahin and Yeonwoo worked out how to break the spell.
Which left Hyebin to take down Agent Jane, the one who had fallen to Mesmero first. And she'd probably have to track down Daisy and subdue her, too, given the lack of contact.
She sighed, the noise gaining a bit of extra oomph as her teeth rattles. She didn't like to fight her direct subordinates, but at least it gave her a chance to show who was really in charge in a more overt way than usual.
She stretched her arms and bounced, shifting her weight between legs and giving her hamstrings little bursts of activity. All to be ready for a fight, but also just to keep warm.
Finally, as Agent Nayun's model predicted, (Ex-?) Agent Jane entered the plaza. It was late at night, and under the dim light of a few lampposts, she was actually quite difficult to see. Hyebin might well have missed her were it not for her long, golden hair, which she had always envied. Jane's catsuit was far more suited for combat than her own leather skorts and high-cut tank top (though it still had a far lower cut than a standard spy combat suit, presumably to give her new handlers something to ogle).
Thinking she might as well try, Hyebin shouted out to her as she walked across the plaza. "Jane! You know you can still come back to us, right? Just rejoin MML and tell us what you know, and I'll scrub this whole thing from your record." Jane couldn't see her charming grin, but she still flashed it just to make herself feel better.
"I can't Hyebin, and I won't. I belong to Mesmero now. I can't even consider such treachery..." She saw Jane stand still for a moment, as if in thought. "I suppose you'll understand soon, so I won't explain."
Hyebin was barely a yard away from Jane now, and could see her eyes were blank. Even her irises were barely visible behind spirals which swirled through the empty whites of her eyes. She had known to expect this, but it was something different to see it in real life. Especially since she was clearly further under than Taeha had been. Her head felt heavy with the weight of her failure as a leader. She tensed her shoulders, fighting against the pressure. She came here knowing what had to happen. And she would do it.
"Aww, Hyebin, don't be upset for me," Jane cooed, "I'm happy now that I'm subservient to my new Masters. And now I'm even happier because I can finally secure you for brainwashing. Then we can work together to absorb MML completely for Mesmero! Oh, it's going to be sooo nice, and all I needed to do was brainwash Nayun first so she'd send you to me!"
Jane was grinning at her stupidly, but Hyebin could only stare at her, open-mouthed. She should have expected this! Nayun had never before refused to debrief her face-to-face. Given the circumstances, she should have been more careful. Her urgency to find Jane was just an excuse. She was so stupid. She was a failure to MML. A failure as an Agent.
She started to think maybe she should just surrender.
Then she realised her head was numb, not just cold. She was staring into Jane's spiralling eyes, her gasping mouth already starting to turn up into a mindless smile. She brought her too-heavy arm up to her face, running it down before her eyes slowly, breaking the spell.
She immediately entered a fighting stance. Even trying to talk to Jane was a trap. Only force could save her friend.
Despite that, she stayed still, bouncing on her toes, but her hands stayed in a stationary guard. In her clothing, her attacks would be slow, she could only hope to beat Jane on the counterattack, where her instincts were more important than her practical flexibility.
Jane threw a punch. Her technique was basic, but good enough to, for example, deck an office worker to the ground if he saw her looking around where she shouldn't. A good, clean punch, straight from the shoulder to the face.
That's what it looked like, but Hyebin's big advantage in the fight served her well.
It was a feint. She knew this, because she was the one who had taught Jane everything she knew.
She ducked, a move which would leave her far too vulnerable to a quick jab, but easily dodged Jane's heavy hook which followed the uncommitted punch. Hyebin's eyes darted upwards, looking for where Jane's guard was now open after her hips swung into the strike.
She knew she couldn't last in a fight with Jane. The blonde was taller, a bit stronger, and better equipped than she was. So she would have to end the fight quickly.
She rammed her shoulder into Jane's stomach, sending her junior spy reeling for just long enough to wrap her arm around Jane's, forming a loose figure 4 with her bent arm and Jane's which she held straight, pulling down with her free arm.
The arm bar should have at least elicited a short gasp of pain through gritted teeth, and had always worked to immobilize even the toughest goons Hyebin had tangled with. But Jane didn't seem to feel the pain at all. Her free arm moved, at a completely normal speed, to grab Hyebin's.
And in that split second before Jane's hand wrapped around her wrist, Hyebin hesitated.
She knew what she had to to. She had to pull Jane's arm down hard - breaking it by using her elbow as a fulcrum. But she couldn't. Jane was her junior. Her beloved trainee. What sort of Agent could break their friend like that?
Hyebin didn't answer her own question, as her arm was wrenched away. Then she found both her arms trapped in an iron grip, pulled towards Jane. She knew Jane was stronger than her, but this was ridiculous. She could barely resist the pull. Something had made Jane stronger. Perhaps something about suppressing the body's natural limits?
Before she could think any more, she was staring into two huge, endless spirals again. Her legs felt like they were suspended in the ocean as the world spun around her. Only the spirals were still. A centre to ground her in a world which made no sense. She... She could stare forever...
Two mirrored spikes of pain broke her out, as Jane's slender fingers found pressure points in her wrists. Her body compliantly knelt, having nowhere else to go in response to the pain.
All Hyebin could think is how this was a textbook takedown. What would come next would be-
Jane's lithe leg wrapped around her neck, squeezing in sort of an improvised sleeper hold.
Hyebin struggled, but her body was weak. The ground still felt uneven. She relied on her instincts, but all she could remember is that when Jane had her in a hold all she needed to do is tap out.
But as her hand limply slapped against Jane's calf, she realised that it wouldn't do anything.
The weight returned to her head. She wasn't strong enough. She couldn't fight.
Red mist closed in from the corners of her vision.
The mist faded. Her eyes started to focus through the blur. She felt cold, hard stone against her back. She was leaned up against a pillar, she supposed.
Jane was nearby, holding something to her ear. Hyebin knew this was no time to speculate on why she had been shown mercy. She started to enter a fighting stance again. She knew Jane was weirdly strong now, she just had to fight smarter and she could beat her.
Her arms stopped taught, lifted barely a few inches above her legs. She tried again, and felt only a tug at her legs. She looked down. The stylish chains on her leather-bound legs had been attached to her bracelets. She had been chained up to herself. Trapped. By MML's designated uniform. More than that, by her own stupid choices.
Suddenly, Jane was in front of her, breaking her out of those pointless thoughts.
"Hey Hyebin! Sorry, I was just talking to Daisy, we were wondering what the best way to break you would be." She was smiling at her, and it wasn't fake. She could somehow see in her eyes that she was truly happy about this.
Her thoughts angrily chastised herself. She was useless. How could she end up getting overpowered and chained up by her own trainee? Jane was better than her now. She wasn't good enough.
The weight of her failures returned to her. Her head bowed a bit under the pressure. She couldn't take it, her mind spiralling in an endless loop of replaying her own self-criticism.
Maybe part of it was because her eyes were locked even now onto Jane's face. Her kind, blissful smile. Her beautiful eyes.
Jane had outwitted her. Jane had beat her and trapped her, using her own stupid uniform as a weapon. Using her pointless loyalty to MML as a weapon. Hyebin wasn't good enough. Jane was better. Jane was stronger than her. Because she was being held back by MML. MML was the weight forcing her down. Jane was stronger because of Mesmero, she had already realised that.
Mesmero was better.
Hyebin felt her eyes forcefully blink. Some part of her knew she was only thinking in this way because of the entrancing spirals in her friend's eyes.
But it was all correct. So why fight it?
"You're tapped here, you know that right?" Jane said sweetly, her voice now had an ethereal quality to it, like she was speaking from a world away. Hyebin didn't need to hear it. She already knew she was helpless, trapped. And it was her own fault for trusting her MML training to somehow beat the brainwashed agent.
"You have no choice but to keep staring." Jane added, her cloying voice stroking the edges of Hyebin's consciousness.
The weight of failure pressed down on Hyebin's mind, making it so hard to think clearly. Any thoughts that remained were washed away by the spiral current. Swept away by the soft breeze of Jane's words.
So all that was left in Hyebin's mind was agreement. She kept staring. Pushed herself to keep her watering eyes open. She couldn't not watch. She needed to keep watching.
The ground continued to rock like the sea, her body completely dizzy and unstable. She was lost in the waves. The only thing pulling her in was the whirlpool of the spirals. The only thing that was still. The only thing she could focus on. The only destination.
Soon the dizziness subsided. The world became flat and still again.
Hyebin was worthless, but even she realised what that meant. She was under hypnosis. She even said it out loud.
"Yes you are!" Jane confirmed, her wide grin full of real joy and welcome.
"Everything's clear now." Hyebin's voice sleepily forced out. "I... I'm not even chained to anything... only to myself." Her own thoughts hastily added that she was chained to her useless, stupid self. "I... My clothes..."
Jane nodded, both girls knew what had to happen. "You need to surrender, Hyebin. Surrender your body, and your mind with it. Let yourself go, and join me."
She made it sound so good, so fulfilling. And Hyebin knew she would. She was chained up and trapped. Hopeless and worthless. She would take this new freedom that Mesmero offered. This new hope.
"I surrender." She confirmed, her voice still sleepy, but somehow sounding resolved as well.
Jane reached forward and helped her to awkwardly remove her leather skorts, then unbuckled the chains to help her take off the thin black tank top.
Even though the clothes didn't do much, she could still feel the cold even more biting at her skin.
She had feared this moments ago, but now she didn't mind.
She was vulnerable. Open completely to Jane. Compliant completely to Jane.
She was hypnotised and obedient to Jane's commands. She knew she was about to be taken by Jane back to her controllers for a complete brainwashing.
But Hyebin had surrendered to this willingly. She had decided it was right.
She smiled at her friend, thanking her for showing her the way.
She would obey Mesmero.
