Description Blender 2.37a
Yafray 0.0.7 with full GI, best quality, 16x oversampling, photon mapping and caustics
22 mins to render on an AMD64 3200+

I started this project with all sorts of complicated ideas but it eventually just evolved into the final and simple result you see here.

Haha, I think we've both been using the same tutorial

Very nice though.

Probably. I got a lot of help from a tut on Wikimedia (or WikiBooks? dammit - can't remember now!) That was a fantastic set of Blender tutorials - do you know if it's still up?

Oh yeah, it's getting quite big now. I don't like those tutorials much though. I don't know why, they just don't seem to be set up very well.

And no, I think there's a tutorial on yafray.org which shows you how to make a ring (a very similar one to this, hence the comment) with caustics and stuff.

May just be coincedence.

Meh, it's a nice render.

I must be honest, I didn't know yafray.org even had a tutorial section - I've always gone there to drool over the galleries and be inspired

Thanks for the comments!

I know, they've got some class stuff. Elysiun (or blender artists forum as it's known now) has some nice eye candy.

Yeah, yafray.org has a very small section, and some pdf about how to minimise noise, and the effects of area lights etc.

No problem!

STUNNING! I've added this example to my journal on blender. Thanks for the heads up, this is gorgeous!!!

Hm...I have a feeling the table should be a tad lighter, but I still really like this piece.

I seem to remember trying it with a lighter wood texture but the problem was then the refection of the table in the ring was a bit too light. Also lighter surfaces reflect more light overall in the scene which made balancing the exposure really tricky, so I settled for what you see here. Must try again with a lighter texture and less ambient light sometime...

Wow, I had no idea it was that complicated! I think you did a good job...It looks great, no matter what shade the table is!

For that, you can thank the authors of Blender and Yafray

Lol! Yeah... I'll need to try those ones to make some effects... right now, I'm "playing" around with Terragen.

Is that HDRI? I don't see a map on the reflection ^^ good job on this I like it.

No HDRI - just photons.

*whistles* Wow. That indeed looks extremely realistic. The light is shining in the correct spots, it's perfectly round, flawless.... I have no idea how you did that, but it is good. Now a favorite.

maverick1001 In reply to AinuLaire [2005-09-01 00:57:10 +0000 UTC]

Thanks. It's not magic - it's done with good old math. First you tell a 3d program (I use the great free program Blender) to draw various objects - the ring, the floor and the lamp in this case. Then you add materials to each object (how shiny, how hard and how reflective it is) and textures (what is it made from?) and place a virtual camera so that the scene looks good from that point of view. Finally you tell a raytracing program to "light" the scene i.e. what would these objects look like after a hundred thousand points of light were shone from the lamp? Then it goes away and does the hard work for you. The longer the wait, the better the quality. Sometimes.

The floor is just a flat plane with a nice wood texture on it. The ring is a donut squished and flattened until it was the right shape. The lighting effects are called caustics and use the same principle as the wavy patterns you see on the bottom of a swimming pool in the sun.

mate, this makes me want to get back into 3d rendering. i can appreciate the kind of effort and fiddling that goes into getting the lighting, texturing and reflections just right. hats off!

Thanks for the nice comments and if you do get back into rendering because of this pic, then I'll be very happy Don't forget to share your renders with the rest of us!

If you're a Blender user you're welcome to the source file to see how I did it - it's surprisingly simple actually, but then I think art is all about simplicity.

i was trained on lightwave. and yeah, simplicity can be quite striking when done right.

Thanks man. I've finally figured out how photon lamps work on opaque shiny objects - now I need to try some transparent objects! I like your idea - will try something this evening
