Description
We stormed Crow's Nest castle after we had seen the black shadows gather overhead. That meant the crows had started feasting on the dead bodies inside. We hoped to find a weak, hungry and tired enemy ready to surrender at the sight of our spears. But the savages had not only survived, they had thrived during the siege. It was not the crows, but the savages that had feasted on the citizens of this stolen city, and the birds had only shared in that Devil's feast. Like wolves with snouts drenched in blood, they came at us, hungry for more human flesh, hungry to rip apart the honor and the history and the sanctity of our land. I was there that day. Excellent work reminding me of the works of Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian. There's a lot of Frank Zetta's influence.

I can't believe I haven't read Conan yet - I'm really eager to finally do that. The closest thing to barbarian fiction I've read is "The Blade Itself" by Joe Abercrombie, and Pratchett's Conan parodies. Which one do you suggest I start with?

I would start with the Robert E. Howard stuff... he only did 21 stories of Conan along with other works starring Kull and other sword and sorcery heroes in which he was instrumental in creating. They're fast and easy reads. "The Hour of the Dragon" by Howard and also "The Tower of the Elephant" and "The People of the Circle" are pretty awesome. I'm also a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft.
