My entry for contest of Kingdom hearts.Theme chosen: I Can't. (duh! XD)
Kingdom hearts does not belong to me, nor does Sora or Riku. But I take full responsability on sora's ass in this pic. Yusss.
This pic is pretty symbolic. If you've played KH2, you probably can see what I mean, not just the light, people! XD If you can't see it and you want to know, feel free to ask me! I'll be more than glad to explain. For those who haven't played KH2 yet. GO. PLAY. NOW. seriously.

hmm i see something in this, but it's hard for me to put into words..errr..
from my point of view @_@, the way the blindfold is wrapped more around riku's hand makes me think that he can't let go of the darkness no matter how much sora holds onto him, like some sort of regret he'll keep there for the rest of his life. 'i can't...let go of this.' or something like that. the way sora is holding the blindfold seems fragile and careful, and he seems like he's trying to lead riku to the light again, at least just for a little bit, yahhh. also, that he'd never give up on him.
homg. i suck. XD but yeah, i've always had the idea that the darkness is the fear that they all harbor, or some sort of regret that they can't let go. great job

D: I feel the same way about this pic. I see something in it that it's really hard to sumarize into words. The kind of symbolism I love, like you know that there's something there but you can't quite point it out precisely. It also makes interesting views when other people see it. And your point of view was actually one of mine too

Hmm... I love symbolism! I'm going to try and solve this! They look like they're having a conversation in an alley - hidden away from everything.
The way it looks, Riku seems to be telling him to join the darkness and Sora can't. ALSO, the blindfold - it's also like he;s telling Sora to lie about something and Sora's so honest and noble he can't do that either. The darkness and light thing is obvious symbolism but a good touch for this picture. Sora's trying to walk away... to walk away from the darkness and Riku and (maybe his homosexuality?! which i mean jeez Sora get out of the denial stage already!) The blindfold is tied around Riku sooo... lying is tied to Riku maybe?
OHOH, GOOD THOUGHT!
Riku: Sora... let's keep our relationship hidden.
Sora: I can't, that'd be lying.
Something like that?! hehe see this is fun.
Hmm, last thought - it COULD be that the blindfold represents their relationship, kind of like a ribbon, and Riku is bond to Sora but Sora doesn't wish to be bound to Riku and is trying to let his end slip through his fingers. kind of like unrequited love.
Haha tell me if any of these are right!
Now let me go of the symbolism and tell you how much like this picture! *nod nod* the light is beautiful - it looks like dawn is arising. And the effects of the light on Sora's clothes is surperb. And vice versa for Riku and his lack of light, it's wonderful contrast. You put in a lot of detail for their clothing (which must have been a pain in the ass! Bondage clothes and all).
Riku's hair is nicely shaded and formed - but it looks a little closer to Zexion's color. The spikes for Sora's hair could be altered a bit too, a few of the spikes look odd and closer to Sasuke's hair (then again i never really paid attention to the BACK of Sora's head...) and Riku;s eyes seem the wrong color - but that might have been intentional because it could be symbolism too maybe implying he's fading back in the dark or something.
But other wise it's very nice, Riku;s expression especally is heartwarmingly tender and you've gotten then postures and body language to be very empahsised. (huh why is Sora only wearing one glove? haha) Still amazing detail, good clean lines and very nice colors. you did a wonderful job!
I just noticed one last piece of symbolism - maybe one you didn't even mean to do. Riku's feet are lying in Sora's shadow, maybe it implies that Riku is now living, metaphorically, in Sora's shadow because the other boy has gotten so much better then him?

Ok, about the symbolism, I have a secret to tell you: My symbolic pics are always vague enough so that people get to see different things. There's no 'right' or 'wrong' in what you or I or anyone sees in this, the fun is to hear what others see! I love the fact that you saw so much on this piece! So I can't tell you it's wrong or right. If it's my version that you want, then here it is. I could never picture Sora actually leaving Riku, this for me is Sora wishing Riku could come back to the light where he is most comfortable. Riku can't go (as he explains in KH2) but also because I think Riku feels comfortable in the dark. And even tho they each want to be on other place, riku still reaches out to hold Sora's hand, and Sora is turned to go but still clungs to Riku's blindfold, because they want to be together. The place they can be together is actually 'in between' light and dark. I like what you saw on the shadow of Sora. I think I see the same.
About the pic itself, I was very careful at picking the colors, so I can tell you they're technically right. Why do you see them different? Because of light matters. The blue in Riku's eyes would look grey in the shadow he's sitting in, same with the lilac-ish color of his hair. And I have no excuse for Sora's hair XD I tried to find a reference pic of the back part of Sora and couldn't find any, so I had to improvise XD Square enix character's hair is my downfall XD The locks may look weird because I'm not used to do hair in that style, and I refuse to make them exactly as they look in the KH original pics. But still, I also agree that they look weird XD

Hmm... *thinks about the colors again* huh... I guess that's TRUE I didn't think about lighting at all haha. Then again I don't draw so I don't really think about these things and how constrasts call for different measures. Your right though, Riku's hair looks more erm... lilac in the dark. Haha, Sora's hair is a challenge as it is, I give you your props for doing your best!
