Once there were a bunch of hungry billy goats, and the best pasture for grazing lay on the other side of a bridge guarded by a fearsome troll. The troll loved goat flesh best of all, and it was never long before one of the goats got so hungry that he decided to cross the bridge. This kept going until there weren't many goats left. Tantalized by the prospect of a bigger meal, the troll agreed to wait and let the youngest goat pass.
After a while, the middle brother of the three came along and began to cross the bridge, *clop* *clop* *clop*.
The troll was certain that this was the older brother that had been mentioned, and he said "Who dares to cross my bridge?"
The middle brother had been expecting this. "I am the middle brother of the Billy Goats Gruff. I wish to join my younger brother in the other pasture to graze."
The troll licked his lips and answered "I am the troll who guards this bridge, and I love goat meat most of all. I passed up your brother, but I think that I will have YOU for dinner!"
The middle brother answered "But our final and oldest brother will be coming soon. He is even bigger than I am - he would make the finest meal you have ever tasted!"
Grumbling, the troll agreed, and the middle brother was allowed to pass.
It wasn't long at all before the oldest brother arrived, and began to cross the bridge with a "*clomp* *clomp* *clomp*.
By this time, the troll was very annoyed - he hadn't gotten to eat even one goat all day, and he was very hungry. He said "Who dare to cross my bridge?"
The oldest brother said "It is I, the oldest of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. I wish to cross the bridge and join my brothers in the other pasture."
Well, you can imagine just how mad the troll was at this point. "I don't care how many other brothers or what have you, and I don't care how big they are. YOU will be my dinner, and I'm not changing my mind again!"
With these words, the troll sprang up onto the bridge to catch his meal. He didn't expect the oldest brother to be almost his size (trolls, if you must know, are about four feet high and very strong). The oldest brother charged, and bashed that troll right off the bridge and into the river below. Safe at last, the oldest brother joined the others, and all the goats were allowed to cross the bridge whenever they felt like it.
Moral of the story? Don't troll unless you fancy getting bashed off of your bridge by a goat (metaphorically speaking, of course).
