“And you’re worried about your husband’s loyalty?” he asks. I don’t think I imagine the judgement in his tone and though I know it is directed towards Caederyn rather than myself, shame burdens me all the same. Whatever Caed’s intentions towards the situation, it is my judgement that placed him as my husband.
“Not his loyalty, no,” I reply carefully. “He’s a good man, Cass.” I don’t know why I’m bothering to defend Caederyn right now seeing as he hasn’t seen fit to do the same for me and my family. Cass makes a noncommittal sound in the back of his throat and frustration rises within me much like bile. “It’s just — he’s too much of a damn coward to do us any good.”
