I have mixed feelings about Fluttercord as a ship -- and I wanna pause here up front to offer a disclaimer: if you ship Fluttercord, please don't take this as a criticism of the ship, or of you! This is purely about my own feelings.

Anyway, it's not that I dislike the ship; I've enjoyed plenty of Fluttercord fics, honestly. I just prefer them as friends, and sometimes the romance makes me a little sad. Purely platonic m/f relationships, without the ghost of "will they or won't they" or some previous romantic relationship hanging over them, are tragically underrepresented in media. When the show itself started gently teasing a romance, at the risk of sounding a bit dramatic, I sort of felt like something rare and beautiful was lost. Kind of. A little bit. Not really lost. More like dented?

My perception of the ship is absolutely colored by my own experiences as a demiromantic, though. Without getting too deep into my personal sob story, in college I thought I had a best friend, but what I actually had was a simp. A classic Nice Guy. I loved him, but not the way he wanted. Friendship wasn't good enough for him. I just want friendship to be good enough in my escapist media.

On the other hand, I also like angst in my escapist media, and romance is a great breeding ground for that. :]
