Ben O. Wolf (hero) is a boy who transfers into Heorot Academy only to find the student body terrorized by the pizza faced Grendel (massive troll), who the son of the Principle. Through boyish (though valiant) pranks, Grendel breaks his arm and transfers to another school out of fear, much to Heath (Hrothgar, Student council president), Wendy (Wealthow, vice president) and the entire school's relief.... that is except for Grendel's mother.

Through more pranks and some investigation, Ben manages to get the woman fired for her misconduct, their final face off taking place by the school courtyard's pond. The Principle's beloved pet Iguana Sue (The dragon), whom she keeps in her office while at work, escapes into the nearby wilderness, and is thought lost.

Years later when Ben himself has become president, students begin whispering of a great treasure hidden in the ravine behind the school, where many items the students have lost over the years has been brought by some kind of monster. Ben and a boy name Will (Wiglaf) go in search of the treasure, only to find Sue, having grown huge and feral over the years. Sadly, the iguana is too much for the boys and Ben ends up in the hospital, his adventuring days over forever.
