Description Custom order, this wand is made so to resemble Asian style. White ash wood, 27-28 cm long (10' 6 - 11 inch), hand carved.

Ash wood proved incredibly hard for my hands, but even though I say it myself, every blister and cut earned actually paid off in the beauty of final piece. This wood gave me the freedom when working with scales and similar details and even though every night of work ended with fingers in the ice bath, I regret nothing

The stand you see in the background is my sister Sanja's work and there's a carved box that also accompanies this wand: [link]

By then, here's the video of this (blurry, as I couldn't get my camera in the end, so this one had to do): [link]

Btw, if interested in any of my objects or in unique custom orders, you know where to find me Hope you like this

You are awesome. I'd like to know what tools do you use to make the tiny details ? i'd just bought the tiniest woods carving tools i've found and i'ts still way to big to make little details like yours.

Thanks

I use the set of tools more or less made by myself, actually. You see, I had the same problem with smallest tools that could be found on the market, so decided to play blacksmith (lol) for a while and converted some miniature screwdrivers and needles into the chisels. Won't lie and tell you it was easy to do, but the effort pays off (and I love working with metal, so it was fun ).

Thank you so much I use few small chisels, some of my own making and sometimes, the whittling knife. Sandpapers, of course

As a fellow woodcrafter I'm curious about the amount of time you put into this peace. im assuming 80+hrs. by chance do you know how many hours you put into this peace?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to Decon-Lee [2013-05-05 12:39:14 +0000 UTC]

You would be right...it's between 80 and 90, all though I can not tell you the straight number. All by hand, so you can imagine. I'm still in the process of curing

PraeclarusWands [2013-04-21 03:56:09 +0000 UTC]

Wow. It's stunning, beyond words. I especially love the detail you put into the scales. The wands I've seen you do are really inspirational and remind me just how beautiful woodcarving has the potential to be. I absolutely love them~ (That being said, the woodworker in me is curious...how did you go about the finer details?)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to PraeclarusWands [2013-04-22 02:18:19 +0000 UTC]

First, thank you very much, truly! I appreciate that you like my wands
As for your question, I use very fine tools for details, chisels from 1 to 2 mm in width of the blade...that helps. Also, I made/smithed some of the tools myself and that helps as well

PraeclarusWands In reply to Maylar [2013-04-22 03:11:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the info! I'm thinking about investing in some 1mm, 1/8", and 1/16" palm gouges, so I'll see what happens.

Yonaka-Yamako In reply to Maylar [2013-04-21 15:25:25 +0000 UTC]

I'm very impressed. I know how tedious scales can be given I have carved them and are in the process once again.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to Yonaka-Yamako [2013-04-22 02:14:26 +0000 UTC]

They can be VERY tedious, you're right...in the end, I had to smith my own tool for that purpose only and it works semi-well (better on flat surfaces, worse on curved, so this wand's scales were done in mixed way, lol).

Also, thank you very much, again...I'm pretty much stunned by your works too, you know? Good luck on those scales, btw, hope the piece will turn out superbly
