Description Well, here's another miniature book...this time a little bigger than usual, the whole 2 cm in height (0.78 inch) and filled with old English styled alphabet. I drew every letter in the stained glass resembling frame.

Book is saddle stitched, hardcover and gilded with golden paint. All done by hand, including painting the "stones" on it red. It took around twenty hours to assemble it all, not counting drying and all the other necessary pauses. But I think it's worth of the effort and am pretty much satisfied with how it looks.

Hehe, alphabet is actually ancient Greek word (from "alpha" and "beta" first two letters of Greek alphabet). It was actualy "alphabetos" and came into Latin in form "alphabetum", from which it came to English (and many other languages). If I remember correctly (my old teacher of calligraphy and calligraphic history would now kill me, probably ), in English there were words like abece and apece and so on for alphabet, but were never much in use. ABC is another word commonly used, but I preferred alphabet for this as it is old looking.

Nah, it actually took me some time to find my old calligraphy books and remind myself of the details...I was originally remembering only the ancient Greek parts, lol. Like my sister later told me: what you have Google for?

Yeah, in a way, they did, at least their ancestors Romans did it basically (Roman Capitals).
Ancient Greek took the original alphabet mostly from Phoenicians, I think, but did something very important: added vowels. It was the beginning of the alphabet.
Romans took it, did some reshaping and formed what we accept as alphabet these days (a western type of it anyway), spreading it through all the places under their rule. On the west, it was additionally changed a bit by countries and their needs and turned into current "Latin" alphabet.
In the eastern parts of Europe, alphabet pulls almost straight line from Greece (Greek Uncial), but I would bore you to death probably with the story (if I haven't already), so better to stop

CYBERBUTTERFLY [2011-02-19 02:14:49 +0000 UTC]

Dear. Lord.

How do you DO letters that small?!?

Okay- that was a serious question. Do you have a special writing tool for that, or is it just a really fine pen, what?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to CYBERBUTTERFLY [2011-02-20 06:46:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I do have special calligraphic pens I use sometimes, but not here. In this case just fine, ordinary pen. And sometimes, I use a very fine brush, depends of what I want to accomplish, you know

As big as 2 cm, eh? Yes, that's practically gigantic!
But seriously, this is amazing. I love how lush and rich it looks with all the gold and rubies and rich decorations and colourful illuminations. It also has a certain lightness to it because of the happy swirls and colours. Beautiful as always!

Maylar In reply to svenmarie [2011-02-20 06:43:59 +0000 UTC]

Lol, well in my world...

Seriously, glad you like it...colors look so much better and truer to original here, than on the YT vid, where they look washed out for some reason.

Glad you like the swirls...my inspiration was in old Elizabethan fabrics ^^ This is a very English book
