Description Please Throw the cigarettes into the garbage can, it's just a couple of steps away. >

The story:
It's an installation piece at my school's art's building, with the sign of non-smoking on, people still smoke there anyway, and more than that, they don't throw the cigarettes butts in the garbage can... which is just a few steps away. After they smudged and extinquish the flames, they just threw it soooo randomly on the grass.... I thought to use those cigarettes to tell a message.
And guess what?
I picked up 452 cigarettes, and that's not counting the ones further away... just before the front door of the building. It took 35 mins, and now... my feet is still sore.

If people see it and say: "Wow that's alot of cigarettes." Then my point is made.

*edit: the grammar, ^^b Funny how i can look into the dictionary and still get out the wrong spelling in the end.

Yeah, I hate cigarettes too...I could never stick one of those things in my mouth.

I know how frustrating it is to see smokers carelessly toss their spent cigarettes away when there is a perfectly obvious form of disposal close by - it really just boggles my mind at the sheer single-mindedness of the act. For example, here in Ireland a smoking ban was introduced into all public buildings so now people have to stand outside when they smoke. Of course they coukld be standing right next to a specially set up disposal unti and what do they do? They just throw their cigarettes on the ground.

Anyhoo, rant over. I love the pic, nice to see you constantly dabbling in all kinds of different forms of art. On this evidence, you'll obviously go well out of your way to get that one great pic!

When I first saw this I thought it was really cool! I was even more impressed that you did that- getting into the nitty gritty for the sake of the picture- is admirable! *tears* I like how that guy is standing there looking at it too- it completes this picture.

after you made this and took

for others to see?

ya know what, a sign only askes people to defy it. i live with smokers and have all my life so to me its not that big of a deal, though i do agree that if your that close to the trash, put it there instead of the ground. has your school ever thought of ashcans (trashcans with ashtrays on them)

mayshing In reply to RunaHisoka [2005-03-30 05:58:25 +0000 UTC]

T_T it was a non-smoking area so it didn't have one... but even the teachers smoke there... so it can't be helped... I do remember seeing something like that somewhere else... just not that entrance though. :/

This is a very powerful message. You should enter it into a contest or something! I bet it will do well.

I hope you used gloves to pic those butts up.... So much foreign DNA...

Yes, that's a good point. I dislike the fact that people just throw there butts (haha) all over the place... My bro and second elder sis smoke now, and I think they smell like crap...>.< Not to mention they too throw they remnents of the cigarettes all over the place. *sigh*

BY they way, this is a very good picture...Nice shot, good view...I think it gets the point across.

Man, I haven't commented on your pictures in a while, Christine - been busy with my own stuff for a while. I hope you don't mind. Also, I still owe you a B-day pic, but I'll make up for that this year after I learn some new skills. I really want to surprise you.

Now, to the picture and its commentary behind the art. I like your camera angle and the composition shot of the image, and how the guy in the photo is seemingly unaware of your presence. It gives it a very immediate feeling, and I like how you can see the trail of cigarettes leading up to the trash can with its oh-so-visible sign. I've also noticed something else - your colors are unified. A lot of blacks, greys, and some highlights of red tie the color schematics together extremely well.

And as for the cigarettes - ick. When I used to go to Mercer County Community College, we had the same problem. There would be cigarettes in the grass right next to the trash cans - some of them were filled up - but overall, you'd see cigarettes everything. It was disgusting and the smell of smoke was strong in some places. It was a common complaint among teachers and some students at the college. Here, at TCNJ, it's not that common, thank God.

Your photo is a good example of a social commentary turned into a modern art form. Good job.

Gah, people are really gross with that kind of thing. x.X It's not just with cigarettes, but with every kind of trash! Plastic bags, bottles... ugh. Kudos to you for making a point. That's a really cool photo too. ^^ Heh, it's kind of amusing; actually, it sort of reminds me of in movies, where they'll run a little line of bait to a trap. Like... in ET, you know? Where the alien was being lured by Skittles. Nice work.

MilesTailsPrower-007 [2005-02-13 07:01:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow, what alot of cigarettes! X___X;;

It's bad that people don't just throw them out; smoking isn't too good for you, but I don't think it helps much to clutter the ground with cigarettes, too. I wonder how many are added there each day? There's probably even MORE all around the vicinity of the building. Wow...

That conveys a pretty powerful message. Not only do people smoke, but they carelessly litter like that sometimes when there's a garbage right there.

lot's pf people miss the self dicipline. I don't think there's anything bad in smoking as long they respect the other people around them.
but sadly they don't, And now they wonder why they're loosing all the right to smoke in public.

*shudders* oh how gross . . . . just disgusting. I'm allergic (like, hyper-allergic) to cigarette smoke, so I know what a pain it can be when people smoke where they aren't suppoused to, but, yeesh . . . clean up after yourselves. Its like they're doing it just to spite whoever put the sign there.
