Description A new character of mine. I've always been fascinated by fetal development and teratology and I wanted to make a sort of animal patron saint of pregnancy and birth. Despite her somber appearance and sickly physical traits, seeing the moon calf is said to guarantee a healthy birth.

Pet away! She's very calm. Doesn't reciprocate affection much, she just sort of blindly stares off into the distance. She makes whimpering mooing sounds or chirps that sound like ice cracking on a lake.

"sort of blindly stares off into the distance" lol just like me when I doze off

aww the cracking noise seems really comforting for some reason? *pats head*

Ooooo, nice!! How exactly does she guarantee a healthy birth? Is this sort of a 'I endured much hardship so your young won't have to' thing, or is it independent to their appearance? Any backstory to share? ;D

Well, she is an enchanted creature, a stillborn aurochs calf that was resurrected as a spirit. Spirits are enchanted creatures that usually give off some sort of positive energy and hers just happens to be related to fetal growth and development. I guess you could come up with some BS about the energy resonating at a frequency that is conducive to stem cell growth and a mother and baby's health. Mooncalf is an old term originating from the belief that the phases of the moon could cause deformities in cattle. Lots of spirits in Storm's world have powers that are linked to the cycles of nature and she would probably have a close affinity with the phases. Mooncalf would be a term in Storm's world and would be applied to this gal automatically because of her deformities. Click is the one who named her Moonie. I wrote on Twitter that she appears at the beginning of rivers and streams, where the water comes out of the ground. She sways when she walks and has a very stilted, uncanny gait. Haven't really come up with much more yet, but I really like how she turned out!

Sorry for the late reply!! Busy weekend, rip. ;^;

OOoooooooo, oh my goodness!! I can see why; the lore around her is incredible, I can almost see her moving in my mind; it'd definitely be a sight to see, especially near running water, reflection distorted in the ripples... Cute, but still a little unsettling. Wonder how her parents felt about their stillborn suddenly becoming a spirit!

Oooh, what's this about the moon being linked to deformities? Which phases would be, say, more likely to result in healthy births? Is this because Moonie is more likely to be around during those times, or does she instead wander near mortals during more dangerous times? Or does she even go out of her way to ensure safe births at all or just... stick around close to springs?

Sorry for me even LATER reply. I just don't use DA all the often anymore besides flinging random stuff up here every now and then.

She's very unsettling but completely harmless. She exists more than she interacts, always seeming to watch things in the distance, trembling slightly. She does not frolic like other baby animals. I love her so much!

Mooncalf is a real word used even today by some writers, but I can't seem to find a whole lot of information about what phases of the moon are "good" and which ones are "bad." Moonie's appearance is always beneficial, regardless of the phases of the moon, but she is so rarely seen that most people believe her to just be a legend. She doesn't come out into the open much and wanders around an area only a couple dozen miles, which is pretty small in the grand scheme of things XD. I think she sleeps during the day at the springs in the forest because sunlight would hurt her skin and eyes.
