Description I was messing around the the RSA encryption algorithm, and came up with this image, thought it was cool. There is another as well:
"RSA xor" [link]

in pseudo language syntax, this image is computed with the basic algorithm:

for every y
for every x
temp = x and y
pixel[x,y] = (temp^7) mod 257;

(if anyone wants a larger size for any reason, let me know)

no, not per my understanding of what a fractal is.

It mostly gives the appearance of a fractal due to it using bitwise operators. Which, have a logorithmic pattern due to the bits being powers of 2.

PNG should be visible to all, what system are you using that can't view PNG?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

Lillyanna In reply to mccann [2008-10-25 03:20:44 +0000 UTC]

I can see PNG images here at DArt. I cannot download PNG images. When I right click on a pic and use SAVE PICTURE AS... it shows PNG for your image. If I save it... it comes in blank (ALL WHITE SCREEN) nothing is there. I can save JPG and BMP just fine. It only happens with PNG

Cool pattern, very quilt like. Have you read "A New Kind of Science" by Stephen Wolfram. This pattern reminds me of his ideas.

mccann In reply to camplte [2006-03-27 21:20:16 +0000 UTC]

ah, I see how it looks like his work.

Though this image too is generated by a simple set of rules, it is essentially graphing a field. Wolfram's stuff, as I understand it is more like cellular logic rules that result in complex systems.

I did read his book, though I wasn't entirely convinced by what he was saying, I do agree that through simple systems on a micro scale can come wonderfuly complex results on the macro level.

I was seeing more fractal images than Wolfram was. He claimed a lot of images as being random, when many of the images had self simular cell images.

The easiest thing to do is just learn how to write colors to the screen, and then do a screen capture.

That way you don't have to learn how to write file formats.

Nifty, I came across this before

You have inadvertently discovered Sierpinski's Gasket (or Sierpinski's triangle, as I refer to it), if you did not know this already!

Recently at university we were discussing procedural algorithms to generate images and a fellow student stumbled upon this when playing about with the & operator.

However you have done something else as well at that, the 'mod 257 thing' (whatever that is?), which seems to vary the pattern somewhat.

Nifty though

mccann In reply to Zihuatanejo [2005-05-26 23:46:31 +0000 UTC]

Zihautanejo:

Yeah, I knew about Sierpinksi's triangle... I just liked the irregular pattern that the mod 257 gives.
(Because 257 is prime)

(I like the XOR better though.. which is more true to the RSA algo form as well)

Ahhh, mod as in modulus, right? Interesting.

Yeah the XOR one looks rather funky. Will have to Google this RSA algorithm

Cool! I hadn't thought of using logical operators except to make split functions.

Colour's easy - pick your colour mix, and then just multiply your current 8-bit values by the appropriate red, green and blue factors. As a bonus, bitmap file generation becomes slightly easier (you don't need to write a palette).

Incidentally, do you mind if I have a shot at recreating this? I won't submit it here or claim it as my own, I just want to see if I can do it.

(I can help out if you need)

-Andrew

surrealist-geek In reply to mccann [2005-03-21 00:47:59 +0000 UTC]

Much obliged. I've recreated 'RSA and' and 'RSA or' - I had to write my own mod fuction, 'cause QBX kept throwing overflow errors. Was there any particular reason for the 'mod 257' as opposed to 'mod 256' or 'and 255'?

I kinda went crazy with the boolean operators - I've got about a dozen pictures to upload next time I'm on the net, almost all [-640,640) -> [-512,512) @ 1280 X 1024. I figure 'unit = pixel' will give the best images for now.

I'll let you know when I upload them - it's nice to come across someone who's actually interested in my geeky stuff. I think it's within my grasp, but thanks anyway for the offer.

Great, let me know when you upload.

257 is a prime number, that is why I'm using that number.
(Technically, its a mersenne prime number .. Prime numbers that are +/-1 off of a power of 2 (not all are prime)

(otherwise patterns would repeat)

I've uploaded most of them, and I'm about to upload the rest (I'm having trouble uploading 1MB files).

Mmkay, that makes sense. Because it was so close to 256, I thought it might've just been a fencepost error.

i don't think i would ever understand how to do anything remotely close to that... shows how much of a graphic artist i am huh? i stick to the writing

anyway, knowing nothing about this, i'll still say that i like it, cuz, uh, i do... though i'd like to see some color, but i know that can complicate things and taking the easy route is the way to go (or maybe that's just my opinion, bleh, who knows?)

buuut i'll just scamper off back to my writing now... hehehe.

Well, I could have made this colored, but it was more work, and also would make it more difficult to mess with.

I somewhat intended for this to be used as a texture or whatever. In which case, a full contrast greyscale image is most useful.
