Lots of people are getting their knickers in a twist over the newly revealed Wonder Woman costume for David E. Kelley's proposed television series reboot. Not everyone is stopping to think that the whole "armored bathing suit" look is near-impossible look for anyone to pull off successfully. We're all just spoiled because Lynda Carter showed up sometime in the late 70s and nailed it. I agree with some of the complaints about the new look - it really IS too shiny - but when people are shaking their fists at the sky because they dared to put her in pants? It's a little over the top.*And I'm pretty sure that's exactly why the internet was invented - for angry hyperbolic discussions about superhero costumes. I decided to take a look at the design in a "natural setting" for a comic book character. A little pen and ink (and Adobe) to gain a different perspective.
As for the actress herself, Adrianne Palicki is the least of the new series' worries, as anyone who watched Friday Night Lights can attest. The girl can act AND she's an Amazonian 5'11". But this is just my opinion, of course. Your mileage may vary.

*I will say though, that of all the redesigns I have seen, so far my favorite might just be Jamie McKelvie's. [link] It even looks like it would fit into the description of Kelley's vision for this new series.

Looks better than the photos, for sure.... apart from the "controversy" over pants vs no pants.... the costume as a whole was muddled and over-designed... the tiara (if we call it that.... "headband?" is like a "w" and all inscribed, the eagle and the belt are the same thing... and they looked like beaded baseboard or rain gutters... too thick and ridge-y... Little "w's on the boots, the bracelets.... we get it-- it's Wonder Woman-- you don't have to shove it down our throat.... less is more....
It could have had a good start, but needed better execution and some editing....

Great drawing man. I don't know why DC never just decided to stick with the Wonder Pants. I always thought it made the character look a lot better.

This is fantastic! I agree completely that folks have gotten a bit too worked up over the TV version of WW's costume, but if it looked as good as you've drawn it, I imagine there'd be fewer complaints.

Could not agree with you more on all the hating on Palicki, who is 5'11" and more importantly, can actually act. If anyone can play 3 different identities, she has the range to do so. And, she ran track back in high school. Lynda Carter and CBS had their day: my family used to watch the show as a family every weeknight back in the day. But Carter, who had some acting ability, mainly got the role for her looks since she was a Miss World USA beauty queen. Carter was but one of many WWs, she is not the be all end all.

If you have been following the WW news: the series may not even happen at all. NBC may not even premiere the pilot. But I do hope the pilot is tweaked becuase I read that it wasn't that bad. Not great but it made some critics wanting to see further episodes and give it a chance. I hope we get more than just a DVD release of the pilot. It looked really promising and was looking forward to Palicki shine.

Yeah, I heard that it isn't likely for pick-up. Can't say I'm surprised. I'm sure the pilot will get out there somehow. I'm curious to see Palicki in the role. Hopefully she gets something good out of all this.

This is a very awesome pic sir or madam! This affirms a statement I had made to a friend of mine that somethings are awesome in the comics, but try to apply it to real life and it get's complicated! I did have much hate for this version of the costume, but the new costume that is in the latest pics to come from the set looks far better. As for the actress, I've seen her pull off a rich variety of characters, so I'm very positive on what she might bring to the role, my small gripe with her is I'd just like to see a bit more muscle definition, bulk up a bit, but that's just a pet peeve I've had with any female hero!

It's looking pretty good with every new thing that is getting put out there. I'm still pretty leery of the direction I hear they are taking the premise, but I'm trying to maintain an open mind. Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I'm kinda leery too, cause everything I've seen is very corporate, much like the producer's previous shows.(Ally McBeal, The Practice, Boston Legal) This makes me sad, cause one of the things that I like about the Wonder Woman story is that it's rich with Greek mythology. If they completely leave that out, I will be a sad Panda....

See, I hate the new costume but not because they've given her trousers but rather because it looks cheap and plastic, like a bad fancy dress outfit and to me, Adrianne Palicki is no Lynda Carter, not even close. But your pic has made the costume look striking and cool. Instead of the leather jacket crap they've changed the costume to in the comcis now they would be better off having a look at your artwork. You've updated the costume whilst remaning true to the original and keeping the essence of the character.

Right? I LOVE the pants, frankly I hate how male superheroes always get the pants, but because the girls tend to be "the sex" they have to wear skimpy swimsuits. Ugh. I frankly like the costume, though the boots should be red and the blue needs to be more muted. Great image here, I just love the casual pose and her confident, calm look.

Gorgeous design and coloring job. I love the pose and her facial expression with Old Glory. Beautiful detail and the outfit don't look too bad, but red boots would've been better
