Probably because Mac's the strong, silent guy and Fluttershy's the weak defenseless damsel. The whole thing reeks of stereotypes. There's nothing wrong if the strong guy has a lady who's smart and can take care of herself!

I was told that it was for a different reason; that there was fanon speculation that Big Mac was both shy and a gentleman and thus would be a good boyfriend for Fluttershy. Although I don't think this is the case at all, he doesn't seem nervous around other people (if anything, overly relaxed), and every good male pony could fit in the latter. >_o

Yeah, I don't think Mac's shy. He just hasn't talked to anypony aside from Applejack and Twilight because he's a secondary character. And yes, any good male pony could be a gentleman for Fluttershy.

I mean, people can ship what they want and for whatever reasons they want, but it seems fluttermac fans seem to believe that it's somehow more canon and it's acceptable to spam pics that have either character shipped with someone else, and that's when it gets upsetting.

Yeah. One person on a Twimac pic was like "Nooooo, Mac loves Fluttershy!" and I'm like, "Since when?"
Another thing, it seems like Applejack and Twilight seem to be the only ones of the mane six who know Mac exists. Applejack had mentioned him to Twilight twice in Season 1 (Ticket Master and Applebuck Season) and they were the only ones to talk to him (AJ, Applebuck Season and Winter Wrap Up; Twilight, Lesson Zero)

I agree, plus there was the licking in s2e2, and him running away with Smartypants, and you know, actually talking to each other. Plus judging by Applebuck season and the fact that he was originally going to be the character who owned the farm, I figure he's also really smart like Twi, making them have something in common.
It isn't MUCH, but TwiMac still has a lot more going for it in canon than FlutterMac.
That, and there are a lot of really obnoxious fluttermac fans. I rarely see a TwiMac pic that doesn't have some sort of "OMG MAC IS CHEATING ON FLUTTERSHY!11 ohnoes" comment.

Seriously, I mean I could understand if it was an actual canon or implied pairing, but it's a crack pairing, more so than TwiMac, so there's no use getting that involved with a crack pairing that isn't going to happen. >.<
