So, my head spawned this story:
Washington, new to his command, is leading a group of soldiers to a nearby fort. One evening, a subordinate informs him that they caught a Native lurking near camp. Worried that he might be a spy for a war party, they captured and bound him so that the Captain could determine his fate.
Ratohnhaketon had been out hunting for deer when he saw traces of the soldiers' passing. Curious, he followed them to camp and began to observe. But his youthful lack of caution led to his discovery and subsequent capture. He refuses to say a word to any of the soldiers, afraid that they might use anything he gives them to seek out his village.
When Washington arrives, he ignores the advice of some of his men to beat the truth out of the Native boy. Instead he raises the boy's anxiously bowed head and speaks calmly to him, asking if he speaks English and what he intended when he came upon the camp. After a moment's hesitation, the boy tells him of his hunt and his curiosity. It is, after all, strange to see large bands of White men this far out in the woods.
Washington believes the sincerity in the boy's eyes and orders his release. Ratohnhaketon thanks him and vanishes into the woods. Privately, the Captain is somewhat enchanted by the lad with the honest eyes and hopes that he'll see him again someday, however unlikely that may be.
