That tortoise-shell cat down there, isn't looking at them. He can't. His head is facing toward us, but the others are behind him. An example of this: I looked backward, away from my computer screen, then I turned my pupils as far as I could toward it, but I couldn't see it still!
Your main cat and the tabby are probably having eye-strains right now. They're both looking the direction forward, but their eyes are facing eachother. Since they're right beside eachother and facing the same as the tortoise-shell cat, their eyes will be all the way to the side, reaching to see the other. That's gotta hurt! An example of this: I decided to turn right until the plush on my computer desk were directly to the left of me. I turned my eyes to look at it, and boy, did that hurt!
These are known as perspective flaws, because you aren't realizing that no one can look at the tortoise-shell, because they couldn't see his face, and his face can't see the others. This is because he's in front of everybody in perspective. It would be impossible to see something behind you unless you turn around to look at it, and it's nearly impossible to see something directly beside you unless you turn to look at it.
