Would you do a commission for this? I would love this for my San cosplay.

what is paper clay?

meanlilkitty In reply to Kitsu4tail [2013-03-29 22:44:58 +0000 UTC]

it's quite literally a clay made from paper and volcanic ash. It doesn't need to be warmed or kneaded before use, and doesn't crack very much when it dries. It stays strong, is sand-able and gets a nice gleam on it when it's given a layer of sealant.

Where did you find the 4-inch pile faux fur? I can't find any ]:

Whenever I can't get to the Fashion District, I can find at least a three inch pile on ebay without much issue, it'll just be more expensive. At a fabric district you can expect to spend about $16/yd vs $26 on ebay or $35 at Joannes (if they even have it)

(im working on my own San costume)

Well the pelt is made of a four inch pile faux fur. I basically just made a random "pelt" shape on the backside of the fur, cut it out, flipped it over to use it as a template, and cut out a second piece. I sewed them together inside out, pulled them rightsize in, then sewed the hood into place. I don't bother putting a interior layer in the hood, because you'll never see it for the mask, and having the inside hood lined made my head really hot, haha. I then hot glued the mask into place, gluing the hood over the mask rather than the inside (to give the face more room. Once the mask is in the right place, I measure out the space for the ears, cut a slit for each ear, fit them through and glue them into place. Just be careful you don't set them up crooked! O_O I do this almost every time and I have to rework them till they fit in the right place. XP

How did you attach the ears to the hood?

meanlilkitty In reply to talliesynn [2012-04-23 05:03:44 +0000 UTC]

Well, the pelt is made of two layers of fabric, so before I sewed the hood into the cape I simply stabbed some holes into the hood and pushed the ears through. Once I was happy with the placement I glued the suckers down. Twas that simple!

what are napkin rings?

meanlilkitty In reply to studioghibli12 [2012-04-12 07:21:38 +0000 UTC]

They're just rings that you use to hold napkins in a roll. They're fairly useless except to look fancy on a plate for a few minutes. I believe they function much better making the eyes and mouth for these masks.

Best San's mask I've seen, so far. It looks so.. tidy, and well measured. Not to mention it looks somewhat cute from this angle, like a surprised face. It be fun to see someone drink with a straw through the mask...

ooh this is so amazing!!!!! if you dont minde me asking, what are the eye holes made from? im making my own and i dont know how to do that part

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

meanlilkitty In reply to kiki1ww [2012-01-28 18:08:06 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thank you! The eyes and mouth are just napkin ring holders. After I made the base of the mask in paper mache, I coated it with paper clay, sanded it, then drilled holes into it for the eyes, then simply glued the napkin rings inside. Haha, it kinda feels like cheating, but the simplest tricks are the best!
