Villains are so biased when it comes down to revenge.
They act as if they are the only one that have lost someone dear to them, while causing the same suffering to others, believing their pain to be more important.
Is supposed to make me feel empathy towards them, but for me it just makes me want to smash them to pieces.

Ehehe, watched that episode of HxH a long ago, but I still remember that scene.
And Gon had a point.

Ehh, sorta.

The problem with that thinking is that it doesn’t take self-interest into account. It interprets a villains motive as retribution (payback/justice in accordance to a moral code or law) as opposed to revenge (desire to inflict harm/payback after one had undergone a wrongdoing inflicted upon them).

The villains know they do bad things, and they know that what they want with their revenge is selfish. They’re not trying to justify their actions to anyone. They’re not trying to say they’re more valid or in more pain than anyone. They just want what they want.

In Gon’s case his black-and-white belief dictates that mass murders should feel nothing for others. That they’re not entitled to have preferences on who they care for or not. Which is foolish, because generally most people have biases about whi they care for. There’s just varying degrees of that bias depending on the individual.

There’s actually a really cool video about this topic for HxH if you want to explore it in more detail:

Well I think that’s what makes some villains so interesting...because it’s easy to say they’re blind to others pain but if we were in their situation with the same things happening with the same opportunities given to us.
Its not sympathetic for making sense it’s sympathetic because pain blinds us to truth...it’s so easy to focus on what happens to us we tend to forget others have likely felt similar or worse pain

It's mostly supposed to show how far they are gone. They focus more on the negative aspects and lose sight of what is important.

For example, Hazel focuses so much on the loss of his sister that he forgot what she would think if she knew what he was doing in her name.

However, if the villain actively acknowledges the other person's grief, but just can't see any other way of dealing with their pain despite knowing that others suffer as well, it's a different story.

Yeah, and I guess that what they wanted to do with Hazel.

But the way they have written him down is just stupid.

He blames Ozpin for every death, despite the fact that he A) has already killed a lot of people and B) he's working with a group of people that doesn't mind causing untold death and destruction all over Remnant.

For me, Hazel should have joined Raven tribe or maybe act as a third group that wants revenge on both Oz and Salem.

Well, Salem has a way with words, so she likely told him her side of the story. As in, she tried to unite mankind and prevent all wars, but Ozpin insisted on having multiple kingdoms. And, to be fair, Ozpin did have at least one opportunity to unite all of Remnant, namely after the Great War, but chose not to.

I think that, if Hazel knows what he does is wrong, he is too afraid to back out at this point, because he already spent so much time and effort trying to get revenge on Ozpin, and forgiving him would mean that all of this was for nothing.

However, it seems he is just blinded by grief and anger, and can't see the error of his ways.

Now, in an ideal case, he would realize that his sister wanted to become a huntress and safe people more than anything, and continue her legacy or something.

The problem is how bipolar Hazel sounds.
One part of him doesn't want to hurt kids and avoid to cause needless bloodshed, yet he sides with a group made by sociopaths that love to kill, especially kids.
The only solution for him doing so is that Salem promised him that, once gotten all the Relics, she will use them bring back all the people he and his partners killed.

Kartoffelkamm In reply to Dreamcastfan [2020-05-05 14:08:31 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, maybe.

We don't know what Salem told him, but we do know that, like Adam, she is terrifyingly good at manipulating people. I mean, she made Tyrian believe she was a goddess.

Kinda funny that she still holds on to that "We can be this world's gods" sentiment from so long ago.

But that's why Salem wants to kill all silver-eyed warriors: She can't manipulate them like the rest. If more silver-eyed warriors existed, and if they were in positions of power, like military leaders, Salem would lose a massive advantage due to being unable to control that military.

If Ozpin had made a bigger effort to recruit silver-eyed warriors, told them he can't stop Salem on his own, and followed their advice, Remnant would be at piece now, and Salem would be about as much of a threat as Azula at the end of ATLA. Just some spoiled brat sitting in a corner and throwing a tantrum, not even dangerous enough to keep an eye on.
