Description Not knowing that their friends too were slowly succumbing to the wonders of romance, Belle and Adam stood, entwined in one another's arms and shared a kiss that could mean nothing less than truest love. As they parted, Belle felt that it took every fibre of her being to do so; she didn't want to break away from him, not now, not ever. Her eyelids fluttered open to see Adam's blue eyes gazing into hers.
"Adam," she whispered, unsure of what it was she was going to say.
His hands caressed her cheeks. "Belle, I've wanted to do that from the moment I met you."
"I know." She felt she would blush if it were anyone but Adam holding her. She had suddenly realised how close she was pressed up to him. Her hands were laid against his chest; she could feel the taut muscles beneath his shirt and his heart beating beyond. Unable to resist, she laid her head against it and closed her eyes. Adam wrapped his arms around her, not so tightly that she felt trapped but securely enough that she felt safe against him.
She felt his fingers sift through her hair and then stop at the ribbon securing it in place. He hesitated, as if asking her permission. "Yes," she murmured, and then she felt her hair spill loose and flow down across her shoulders like a waterfall. Adam ran his hands though it; soft as silk. Belle sighed softly and pressed closer to him, wishing she could melt into him and become one with him; they were already one heart and one soul, why not one body?
Presently his hand found her cheek again and as he brought her head up, she she closed her eyes and allowed her lips to part against his. Sudden eagerness overtook her and she slid her arms around his neck and clung to him. No man held her heart but Adam. When she was a child she had dreamed of romance; she had heard her father's tales, he had told her that it was the most wonderful thing in the world and she had longed for it. When he had died and she had been alone, temporarily she had lost her dreams along with her hope; but upon meeting Adam that first time they had all come flooding back to her. Whilst Odette and Derek had been forced to play together and take carriage rides together without them, Adam and Belle had spent their summers together talking and laughing and debating about books they had read. She had always found Adam very kind, gentle, understanding and easy to talk to; and now she also found him handsome enough for a prince; he could easily have his pick of richly dressed noblewomen and princesses with flowing blonde hair and lavish gowns. But he was here now with her; Belle, the daughter of an inventor, a servant like him, the best friend of Princess Odette and Adam wanted her. She couldn't believe it.
Just then a swell of sound caused them to break apart and look around. Singing and orchestral music was flowing from the room in which Derek and Odette had been ushered by their parents. Belle and Adam both laughed. Adam dropped his arms from Belle's waist. "I guess we'll be expected to join them now."
"Yes." Feeling like a child who was getting away with something naughty, Belle retrieved her ribbon where it had fallen from the floor and attempted to gather her hair up neatly. A servant walking around another person's palace with her hair down was frowned upon; why, it was almost as bad as walking around scantily clad in public.
"Here, let me." Smiling, she turned and allowed Adam to tie her hair for her. "Thank you."
"Belle." He took her hands and turned her to face him. "This could be it for them, Derek and Odette, I mean. They might finally..."
"...Fall in love," Belle finished. "Oh, Adam, do you think they would?"
"They may do. And then, well, we'll certainly see a lot more of one another," he smiled.
Belle laughed. "Yes." A brief pause and then she flew swiftly to his arms and kissed him lightly. He brushed the small stray strands of hair that were too short to tie up away from her eyes. "So, may I escort you to the ballroom, my lady?"
"You may." She took his arm and as he led her from the corridor, she felt that nothing could possibly bring her down...
