Description My latest project. A late 15th century dress, designed to wear in the role of an armourer's wife. Almost Tudor with the square neckline, but not quite, just a bit earlier!

Here are some of the inspiring paintings:

1. [link]

Above: A van der Weyden: Note how the belt hangs and the presence of gathered skirt at the waistline.

2. [link]

Above: 1490, van der Weyden: Note the square neckline, the white partlet/neckerchief around the neck and the linen coif.

3. [link]

Above: 1470's, Unknown master, Flemish: Lady in the bottom right corner - again, note how the belt hangs, the side lacing and gathered skirt.

4. [link]

Above: 1465-68, Calvary Triptych: My favourite image of all, it inspired my colour scheme and convinced me that a gathered skirt was a must-have! Note the hanging belt again, and the brocade sleeves in contrast to a very plain dress.

Its fine green wool from Bernie the Bolt:

Lined with some fine cotton lawn in pale pink. Side lacing with tiny metal rings on the inside edge and narrow ribbon. Split skirt down the sides to the floor, though these may be sewn together eventually.

Belt is woven wool braid, hanging nicely on the gathered waistline at the back - proves that it wasn't just artistic licence!

Good job! Could you send me a link (or something) of "the popular paintings" you mentioned, please?

I was just curious - i don't think there should be such norm (especially here on DA), but i really wanted to know. I'm glad you extended my knowledge.
I've been in a rush too. I have to finish a few costumes till Wednesday. As well late 15th c., but male's costumes.
