Description Nobody ever comments on Octavia having the wrong cutie mark. The violincello is a low-pitch instrument, so all of its musical notation is written with a BASS clef, not a treble clef.

.

My personal headcanon is that Octavia’s special talent is actually for playing the dulcimer- appropriate to her cutie mark- and that her sister Allegra was the one who had a talent for the cello (and thus got the bass clef). Octavia, however, was so dedicated to her craft that she thought of trading on talent rather than skill as somehow cheating, so she studied and practiced until she was as much a master of the cello as her sister, but through her own hard work rather than flank-fate.

Talent and skill? Isn't that the same?

Talent is what you're born with, like a good sense of balance and hand/eye coordination, or the ability to run fast; that's why cutie mark magic is called a "special talent", because it's tied to the fate a Pony is born with. Skills are something you learn, rather than being born with the ability to do naturally; all of the various things like planting and treebucking that Applejack does around Sweet Apple Acres are part of her talent for farming, for example, but being able to play a mean fiddle is a skill that she had to learn separately. The people who are usually the best at any given endeavor are those who have a natural talent for it and also learned skills to develop that talent into something better than it would have been with no training.

Many artists and craftspeople consider it a mark of pride that they had to work hard to develop the skills that let them be successful in their field rather than simply being born with the ability to do it without really trying, and Octavia definitely seems to me like the sort of artist who works very hard to make it look that effortless.

Funny. I saw this at the Fiesta Equestria convention as a tag for ten dollars.
Would have bought it... But there was other merchandise that warranted my money.
Still, it is a classy piece of art thought.

What table was that at? My prints were $5 each and badges $4 each or two for $6 at my table.

It was in the upper left corner of the merchandise room, near where cards were being sold for the official MLP card game, as well near to where those big posters, blankets, and banners were being sold.
I believe they were selling pass cards to those who got to the convention late, though still want to have something stylish to identify themselves. My memory is somewhat foggy in this regard, so my apologies for being unable to provide the exact details. I found the table itself during the third day of the convention.

Thanks! I really hope she gets some lines in S5; there's a lot of potential for wacky hijinks with prim and proper characters.
